Question about the automatic transmission

Hello,

Prospective future nsx owner here. I currently own a Toyota mr2 spyder that has a sequential manual transmission (SMT) and love it. I believe the nsx automatic has paddle shifters but I'm not very familiar with that system, hopeing to find someone knowledgeable about both the spyder SMT and the nsx auto + paddle shifer who can explain the similarities and differences to me.

What I like about the SMT is that it is like a clutchless manual. You're required to shift up, it shifts down to 1st or 2nd automatically at low speeds. When you shift there is no clutch pedal to push in.

Thank you in advance
Dan

The NSX has a regular AT made of wet clutch pack slush box. The tiptronic that came out in later years is kinda bogus....same AT with a little pinkie switch interface.

Saying all that: the NSX AT is extremely response and enjoyable to drive.

Quote from that chatty bot:

The Toyota MR2 Spyder with a Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT) and the Acura NSX with a Sport Shift Automatic Transmission both represent different approaches to combining manual and automatic shifting systems. Below is a breakdown of their similarities and differences:

Similarities

1. Hybrid Shifting System:

• Both transmissions offer the convenience of automatic shifting while allowing the driver to manually select gears.

• They aim to provide a more engaging driving experience without requiring a traditional clutch pedal.

2. Paddle or Lever Controls:

• Both systems use paddle shifters or gear selectors (e.g., a gear lever or buttons) to allow the driver to shift manually.

3. Target Audience:

• These transmissions cater to drivers who want a balance between performance and ease of use.

Differences

Toyota MR2 Spyder SMT

1. Type of Transmission:

• The MR2 Spyder uses a Sequential Manual Transmission, which is a manual transmission with automated clutch operation.

• Shifts are performed using actuators that operate the clutch and gear selector.

2. Manual Roots:

• The SMT is based on a traditional manual gearbox, so it retains characteristics like a more direct mechanical connection to the drivetrain.

• It does not have a torque converter, which allows for a more “raw” and engaging feel.

3. Performance and Feel:

• Shifts can be slower and less smooth compared to modern automatics or dual-clutch systems.

• It feels more mechanical, which some enthusiasts appreciate.

4. Drive Modes:

• Typically lacks fully automatic mode; the driver must manually upshift and downshift.

Acura NSX Sport Shift Automatic

1. Type of Transmission:

• The NSX Sport Shift Automatic is a traditional automatic transmission with a torque converter, enhanced by a manual shift mode.

• It is designed for smoother operation in everyday driving.

2. Automatic Roots:

• The system prioritizes smoothness and ease of use, making it more user-friendly for casual driving.

• The torque converter allows for a seamless power delivery, especially at low speeds.

3. Performance and Feel:

• Shifts are smoother but can feel less engaging compared to a manual or sequential system.

• It’s better suited for those prioritizing comfort over raw, mechanical feel.

4. Drive Modes:

• Includes a fully automatic mode for convenience, in addition to the manual mode.
