Purchasing NSX in USA

I am looking to purchase a NSX and it seems likely I will have to purchase in the USA. Can NSX prime members please give me some advice as far as what is involved with a Canadian purchasing a vehicle in the USA. What taxes are involved? Do I pay a local state tax to the seller? What paperwork does the seller have to provide me? What paperwork should I complete for Revenue Canada prior to the purchase? What do I need at the border when I return? Do I pay the GST at the border or prior to leaving to get the vehicle?

Thank you very much. I am extreamly motivated to getting my NSX. There is one for sale here in Vancouver @ Vancouver Honda http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/ctd/1356770933.html but the price seems too high. I feel safer dealing directly with an owner. I have been following NSX Prime for a couple of weeks now and I would rather find a car here.

Thanks in Advance,

John

Check out riv.ca. There is a load of information on how to import a vehicle.

The coles-notes version: ~$200 import fee, recall clearance letter (if car is not 15 years of older), 5% GST, 6.1% duty.

What taxes are involved? Do I pay a local state tax to the seller?

At the border, you pay GST 5% and Duty 6.1%. When you register the car in BC, you pay the PST (if there is any). If you are buying from a private seller, you dont pay any local state tax. Just the agreed amount.

Seller needs to provide you with the ownership. Would also be nice if the seller got you a temporary plate. You will need to call you insurance company and get temporary insurance. You will need the VIN for that.

Paperwork for Customs Canada is the import form. You might need the recall clearance letter if the car is not 15 years or older. You pay the GST and duty at the border. I think you need to call 3 days in advance the border crossing you are coming back thru. Something like that, you should double check with riv.ca.

Thank you very much. If you know of any local cars please let me know. (I assume you are in wash state) I need to keep it under $28k and ~ 40,000miles would be nice. It does not need to be in perfect cosmetic condition as I plan on driving the car a LOT Thx again. John

for that price youre going to run into all kinds of salvaged and previously wrecked cars. I would be very cautious buying a car with a wacky title outside of your home province. People have been unable to register cars after having bought them in the past.

I'd save more and get a good NSX.

You might want to take a look at this car:

Once you factor in the exchange, duty, and GST, you are already around $35000 or so. Factor in the gas, hotel and possibly airfare (if you are going to import the car yourself) or the cost of a transporter or broker, and it might be worth the extra bucks to buy a local car and save some time and hassle.

I bought a car in the US last year and it was very straight forward. The above is excellent advice. If you can wait a month or two, I bet you'll find Canadian cars in that price range. HOWEVER....

Shopping in the US opens up a much larger selection, and you may find a very motivated buyer with their economy the way it is. If you do buy down there, get it checked over with a very experienced NSX tech, and factor in any repairs or neglected maintenance into your price.

If you spend every dime you've got on the purchase and then a timing belt, or tranny goes, you're euchered. Biobanker is right, save and wait if you can. You'll find a great car!

BTW - this website is the best place to look. Keep in touch and someone here will probably find a car for you!

I'm not sure if you noticed, but that was an Automatic transmission NSX at Van Honda. If that's what you are looking for that's cool. I'm in a similar situation to you and have gotten all excited over a FS listing in the past only to realize that it was an automatic- definitely not what I am looking for.

Good luck in your search- keep us posted.

PS- The positive support and assistance shown by fellow primers continues to amaze me.

Yes I have seen the NSX in Van Honda in person. It is actually the car that got me thinking about getting an NSX. It is in excellent cosmetic shape and low kms, however I did not get any info regarding service records. We will see if the price comes down?

Congratulations. Hope to see you around. You should bring it down to Acura of Lynnwood this Sunday and put it on the dyno.
