I recently bought a used Anytime Borla Exhaust system which had a small crack at one of the exiting exhaust pipes where the plate joins the 2 pipes together. He welded it closed for me and at that time I decided to have him install the exhaust since it was sitting at his shop. When I drove my NSX there, I didn't think my car would be able to make it up the lift ramp and driveway but he had pieces of wood to get the car up without scraping. My car is lowered about 1" so I was glad he had something for pretty low clearance cars.
I was going to do the job myself but am so glad I didn't try. The bolts were almost welded together and he needed an impact gun in order to take them off. I saw him trying to use a rachet and it wouldn't budge. After he removed my RSR exhaust, he fitted the Anytime in its place and it was pulling way over to the left as the tips were not lined up. After looking at the entire exhaust system, he immediately figured out it was the Comptech adaptor pipe that was causing the problem. My car is a 92' with a Comptech header from a 95-96 so I needed the Comptech adaptor pipes. He ended up taking the adaptor pipe off and then cut it at the flange and made a small slip piece and refitted it back into the car. At this time the exhaust relaxed back into place and the tail pipes were centered to the stock rear valence. He then spot welded the slip piece onto the flange and adaptor pipe and removed it back off to full weld the piece on. Then he had to unbolt the exhaust at the cats and headers in order to reinstall this piece and then finally tighten down everything. I also ordered a pair of exhaust gasket rings from Acura for the cats to exhaust area and he also put some exhaust paste along with the gasket rings before he connected everything to make sure there was no exhaust leaks.
After everything was done, the exhaust looks great and even better, it has exactly what I was looking for in an aftermarket exhaust. Again, this is the original Anytime Borla Exhaust system and not the race exhaust which is very noisy. The dual tips are the perfect size to fit within the stock rear valence. The sound is louder than stock but is alot quieter than the Comptech and even quieter than the RSR. The real test was when I started to drive home. There is NO DRONNING in the cabin what so ever. This exhaust sounded almost as quiet as a stock muffler when you just drive normally. Once you jump on it, it is a totally different story. It has this very unique sound that I haven't heard from any other system. I guess those that will see me on 5/22/05 on the regrease the window track day will here it and maybe one of them can describe it better.
The performance is very similar to the Comptech as I can tell the car is much more responsive and actually feels a little lighter. When I had the RSR installed, the car felt a little bit slower than when I had the Comptech. I figured it was a trade off between sound levels and horsepower. This Anytime Exhaust is the best of both worlds. I am so happy with this exhaust and also with Emmanuel's Mufflers for taking the time to install this exhaust system properly. I think many other place will just bolt it together and just say that is how it is and there is nothing we can do about it as it is probably the bad design of the aftermarket exhaust system.
The moral of the story is: If your exhaust system doesn't fit centered to your rear valence, it could be the header or adaptor pipes that cause the tips to not be centered. If you take it to a good muffler shop, they should be able to figure out what is causing the problem and fix it for a minor fee. I have been bringing almost all my cars for exhaust work at Emmanuel's and I have always been 100% satisfied with his work. I will post some pictures of my exhaust later when I get a chance.
