Problems with SSR wheels?

Anyone using SSR Integrals 16/17 combo having problems with tire wear/balancing? I was previously running stock 15/16 wheels and had an alignment done before fitting my SSR's. The rears (Yoko's) lasted about 5000 mi. (normal) and seemed to wear across the center faster than the outer treads (normal?). The fronts now have about 6000 mi. on them and the inner tread on both is wearing faster than the rest of the tread (normal?). I recently started to get some steering wheel vibration at 65+ mph and had the wheels balanced. The shop pointed out that both tires were cupped and that the original balance was way off. After three tries at balancing, the vibration is still there. I put the original 15's back on to rule out any suspension problems and sure enough, the vibration goes away. Now that my fronts are cupped...Are these tires trash now or should I find a shop that can "true" them? It seems I've had a hard time getting a good balance with the SSR's from the get-go, yet two different shops have assured me that the wheels are fine.

It sounds like an alignment issue. Your inside portion of the tread indeed should wear faster due to negative camber that is dialed in to your car, but that would not cause the tires to cup. It is most likely a toe issue that is doing that. As far as "truing" a cupped tire goes, that is really a lost cause. If it were me, I'd take that set of tires to the track and use them up (just an option). Also, if you had a bent wheel it would shake at almost all speeds, not just at 65 mph.

I had similar vibration gremlens with ssr wheels and my issue was that the hubcentric rings were the wrong size.Make sure your rings are on, and that the right part number coresponds to the invoice from tire rack or whichever vendor.

docjohn,

I bought this set used from another NSX owner, so I don't have any order documentation. How do I tell if the rings are on at all?..and should there be a part number on them?...Sorry for the ignorance on this subject.
Thanks.

The rings are easy to see, they will be on the inside of the wheel where it sits on the hub. The part number will be eched in the side of each ring. The front ring that you need is a 74/70.1ssr, and the rear ring will be marked 71/64ssr. If you don't have them, I can have one of our guys help you. If you do not have the rings in, your car should be shaking like crazy at most if not all speeds. Hope that helps,

I heard something about a racing team bending 48 sets of SSR rims during their season, and SSR's attempt to fix this problem to no avail... Is this true??? Because my bro's thinking of putting SSR rims on his RSX-S, and that story makes me and him a bit uneasy...

You have to love the internet

That was an SSR competition that was used in a BMW fittment. The user had purchased 16 wheels (not sets!!!!!) and ended up bending 5 or 6 wheels really badly. In case you are wondering it was the same one corner of the car each time and they had no other issues with the other three corners of the car, and in the end we ended up giving him 6 more wheels free of charge for the benefit of the doubt. Also, the reason they started using the SSR is becuase they were bending the wheels that they were currently using. That customer is one of the fastest drivers out there, but like JP Montoya, sometimes good drivers break things frequently! I use SSR's on my NSX, and I had them on my 996 and Boxster as well. If you came to my work (the Tirerack) you would notice more SSR wheels in the parking lot than any other brand.

Aaron,
I found no evidence of a hub ring on any of the wheels!..The rims do seem to fit properly/flush on the hub, and I can't detect any free play once they are torqued down. Until recently, I have not had any severe vibration, but I gather from your previous post that these rims should have come with rings..Is it possible they could have fallen off during a balance? Help!

Thanks

DaveJP:

This is your lucky day. I was one of the first guys on the list to put on SSR Integrals back in 1997. I too am running 16/17. I originally put them on with Dunlop SP8000's and they vibrated like you described. I toughed it out for over a year and numerous balances trying to get it right. I finally switched tire brands (went with Kuhmo),found a good recommendation for a guy that knows how to balance specialty wheels (thanks Doug H.) and everything is good today.

Regarding the hub rings, just because you pulled the wheel and didn't see them doesn't mean that you don't have them. Look inside the wheel as they are probably fused to the wheel from the heat - as are mine.

DaveG,

Thanks for the info, because I could not find anything that looked like a part (ring) that had been inserted into the center of the wheel, let alone anything with a part number on it. If it were truly not there, would it be visually noticeable when I mounted the wheel (ie a gap between the hub and wheel center)? I am also going to take Aaron's advice and have the alignment rechecked.

The ring is either stuck in the wheel hub and should be visible or is stuck to the hub of the car,If none of the above you need them so get them from tire rack.My only experience with vibration due to strictly the tire is when the tires are worn significantly, they can ride harshly, such is the case with so2 pp.

If you do not see the ring in the wheel, make sure it is not stuck on the lip of the hub (this is usually where they end up). This may or may not be the vibration you are getting but either way you definitly need the ring, no question, it is plain unsafe to use the wheel without it. If you do indeed find that there are not rings on the hub or stuck in the wheel, drop me an email to [email protected], and I will have one of the salesman contact you to get them sent out (that way you won't need to call or explain what you need or anything). No need to worry, they are only a few dollars each.

No offense to Aaron, and I am mostly a happy TireRack customer, but their track record with me lately is not great. On one new set of wheels/tires they mounted one directional tire wrong which required a trip to a local tire shop, and on my SSRs they supplied the wrong centering ring for the fronts which delayed things several days.

Of course you should always check everything closely, but there should be a reasonable expectation that they will get the basics correct. In both cases I did catch it, but others might not have and even for me it amounted to an avoidable hassle. These days that counts for a lot.

Just to clarify..I did not purchase these rims new from TireRack. I have always had great service from them. I should have the hub rings today and I will give an update soon.

Update on my vibration problem: Got the hub rings on Friday and installed (thanks Aaron). The car is definitely smoother, although I do still have some vibes from the cupped front tires. I did a crude alignment check and my toe is within normal limits, so it looks like the missing hub rings were the culprit. Thanks again for the great service Aaron.

No Problem, I'm happy we solved the shake. Now all you need is a few track days to kill the cupped tires
