Problems with key

I was unable to remove the key from the ignition last night after I pumped gas into the car. I am wondering if it is an issue with the key or something else. I left the key in the ignition when I was pumping and when I got inside the car it would not start and I was not able to remove the key. After a few minutes of fiddling with the keys and having no success, I shifted the gear from Park all the way down to first and at that time, I was finally able to remove the key(not sure if this is a coincidence or if the gear switch triggered something). I put the key back in and it started no problem and I was able to remove the key with no problem when I reached my destination.

Sounds like the park safety sensor/switch is starting to malfunction.

The car didn't think it was in park so it would not start the engine or release the key.
