Problem with turn signals cancelling

I tried the FAQ and forums but couldn't find anything on this. I'm having a problem with the left signal cancelling early and the right one sometimes doesn't cancel at all (although it will if it's a tight enough turn).

I've checked the shop manual and the steering wheel is lined up properly with the indicator mark. I gather from the diagrams that there is a cam on the steering wheel which triggers an A-B switch to electrically cancel the signal. Since both signals do cancel, I'm guessing the relays and switches are ok .. either the cam has rotated out of sync with the wheel or maybe the switches have.

Has anyone run into this? I'm not looking forward to messing with the airbag to get to the column covers.

Before I bought my car it had this problem. Whatever caused it had to be replaced. I will look on the bill to see what it was.

This happened when I first purchased mine and it was due to the alignment being off and the steering wheel was not returning to exactly center. Once the car was aligned it went away.

Larry, I presume by 'alignment' you mean a front end alignment. I had mine aligned about 6 months ago by the local dealer so I don't think that's my problem. I've only been driving the car since Jan which was about the time of the alignment.

When you say 'not returning to center' was it obvious? ie. was the steering wheel skewed a bit when you drove straight ahead?

Yes, exactly. It was skewed one way. I really thought that the turn signal module was screwed up, or the cam in the steering column was somehow off position, but once the wheel was straight again, all was fine.

They actually have a pretty elaborate setup for turning the directional off. It has microswitches that sense the steering wheel transition back to center.

Since my alignment solved it, I never went any further to look at parts cost and the repair procedure.

Good Luck, hope it's a simple fix. If you do need the part I suggest a used one out of a wrecked car. I am having a hard time believing this is a part that fails regularly.

LarryB
