Problem with new surtrack replacement driveshaft.

Hello Primers,

I got a replacement driveshaft made by surtrack (HO8166) which seems to be quite common here in the forum for use in non-FI cars. Did not read anything bad about it.

After I put it into the car half way I noticed excessive play and instantly removed it again. Even more than the old 160k miles stock driveshaft.

Here is a video of it on the bench.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Seems the inner CV joint is already shot even though the axle has not done a single rotation in the car.

Both original driveshafts have play in the inner CV joint. I wanted to used the inner parts of the left, which is still pretty good, to repair the right. The right inner CV joint is worn which seems to be common.

Suggestions?

Maybe its just a minor thing that can be repaired which would safe me a lot of money shipping it back to the vendor.

Cheers,
Bernhard

I rebuilt mine last year as preventive maintenance. I definitely did not see/feel any rotational play in the shafts. So, from my experience of only ever doing 1 set of driveshafts, this is not normal.

I would first talk to the vendor before mailing it back. I would re-do the video showing just a portion of the shaft and just the end that has play, showing the actual play a little clearer. The vendor may be inclined to pay for return postage with clear evidence that the assembly is defective.

just checked mine (suretrack HO1866)out of box , slight amount of play ,yours sounds like the joint is dry , try extending and compressing it to circulate the grease , still a problem send it back

I ordered a replacement. When I get it and its also bad, I will return both.

That would be anoying because I will have to order new oem ones which is crazy expensive.

The saga continues:

Received a second driveshaft as replacement.

Same shit, different day ...

I ordered the right inner joint from Honda. I will rebuild the left inner and reuse it. Already got the boot sets from Honda.

380 Dollars seems a lot for just a CV joint but as you can see in the video at the end, the 160k mile outer cv joint is perfectly fine. Can't beat Honda parts quality.

lesson learned...

Just a little add-on for international customers of RockAuto.

It probably is easier for US customers due to cheap return shipping but when it comes to international shipping and customer care, RockAuto is not great to deal with.

I lost a lot of money on that even though the parts are absolute rubbish. Also the manufacturer itself was not helpful at all.

What I have now are two junk driveshafts and $100+ minus ...

No news. The manufacturer did not comment on the issue at all. They said I should get in contact with rockauto regarding refund. I am still out $100+ and I think I will never see that money back. So I will keep warning people to not buy from rockauto because their customer service is non existent and they sell products with questionable quality control from manufacturers who do not stand behind their crappy product.

Hmm. For many parts, RockAuto handles a number of suppliers, and often quality varies with price. I've had cases where parts I purchased were actually OEM under a different name (coil packs, brake master, clutch slave, etc) and at a fantastic discount.

For a non-NSX car, in a case where 2 parts were suspect, I replaced one & then returned the other to them and all I had to pay was the shipping.

On the other hand, I doubt I would purchase a re-manufactured part for the NSX from them.

So, it looks like some of us have had good experiences with RockAuto within the US; but based on your issues that experience doesn't appear to be the same for those in Canada.
