Pre-Purchase Inspection

Obviously very important to have done, but I have a few questions about the protocols here. Are they typically done at the seller's location? If it is a dealership that is selling the car, do they typically allow them to use the lifts and other equipment to help examine the car? If it is not at the seller's location, is it the seller's responsibility to get it to the inspection location or buyer's responsibility? How much should it typically cost?

Thanks.

Define "seller's location". Some are cross country purchases (like mine).

If it's an Acura delaer, wellllll, they've already inspected it and may not let you take it anywhere else. As far as having a representative of yours inspect it at their dealership, wellllllll, not sure (but I'd suspect no)

If it's NOT an Acura dealer, or it's a private individual, they should be willing to let you have it inspected. Who pays for what is almost always subject to negotiation. Within limits they might take it (and pick it up) to where you want it inspected for no charge but you will be expected to pay for the actual inspection.

I believe most PPI's would run you somewhere around $100 or so.

That's the issue at hand. It is halfway across the country from me and at a dealership, but not an Acura dealership. I'm trying to get an understanding of the general boundaries and protocols here so I know where I stand with regards to the PPI prior to discussing it with the dealership/owner.

Most sellers realize that in order to get their asking price for the vehicle, they will be expecting the buyer to ask for a PPI. Typically the seller will take the car to the buyers selected place for inspection. The buyer can pay for the inspection directly to the place of inspection and receives the inspection report. Then the seller picks the car back up when ready. With the inspection report in hand, the buyer can now proceed to deal with any issues found during the inspection and continue to negotiate to buy the car, or not.

My car was also halfway across the country and from a private dealer. I had a 30 day gurantee of returning the car if it was not represented properly. But I would lose the $1200 for trucking it here and ppi. But good thing everything checked out ok so a happy ending it was.

This is where I got my car......they will usually carry one NSX for sale every now and then.

1) I agree that it's extremely important to have done. Unfortunately, while it isn't common, it's not exactly uncommon to see NSX's that are sold or being sold as "perfect" that have experienced accidents both with and without the knowledge of the seller. In many cases, it is only a competent mechanic that can discover the damage.
2) PPI's are usually performed at a place of the buyer's chosing.
3) I doubt a dealership (Acura or not) would allow another mechanic or dealership to use their lifts, etc. Most prudent sellers are willing to transport a car a reasonable distance to the location of the buyer's choice provided the buyer pay for the PPI (whether he/she is happy with the results or not).
4) A few years back, a PPI at a good Acura dealership or independent mechanic here in S. CA was about $100.

As you can tell by my current signature *I* am negotiating ALL the way cross country

The lessor took it to an Acura dealer (close by though) for me. It is being inspected as we errrrrrrrr,,,,,,, speak  In fact, he offered to take it up to 1/2 hour's ride away from him to have it inspected but I'm having it done nearby (him).

In fact, my new bestest friend "George Grigoriev", a member here at "prime", looked at the car first for me. He also posted pics of HIS Imola and *mine*(?) together here on "prime". (Mine's on the right )
