Power Window Switch or Control problem

I've recently encounted intermittent problems with the Passenger Window. I've already had both regulators changed and haven't had a problem until now.

Driver side window rolls up/down flawless, but passanger side works intermittently. So while I was doing my stereo upgades I decided to check the FAQ and also looked at the service manual.

So this is where things stand. I've followed the trouble shooting guide in the manual can't find any loose connections of defect switches or anything for that matter. When I apply pwr direct to the regulator works fine. I greased up both driver/pass regualtor assemblies, tracks etc as outlined in the service manual.

When the drivers switch works and passenger side works. When the windows stops working I play with the driver switch and pass switch at the same time TADA!... it starts working again for a few days.

Anyone have some ideas? Is there not a control unit behind the glove box, does anyone know how to test that unit? I couldn't find anything in the serivce manual, unless it is somewhere other than the window stuff?

Thanks,

The only control unit is for the "auto" down on the drivers window motor, located in the drivers door. Sounds like you have an intermittent switch, IF ALL the wires are intact.

The only way to find this would be the have the passenger door panel off when it is not working and check where the voltage stops from getting to the motor.

I think the two switches actually work in parallel, with the exception of the main"off" switch on the drivers side which stops the passenger window from being rolled down from the passenger switch. mmm....maybe on to something here:). Page 23-262 shows this "Main Switch" I would be checking this lead to the passenger switch for starters.

Does the window completely stop? can't go up or down? If so, check that "Main Switch". Other then a wire this seems like the logical choice.

Check to make sure they are plugged all the way in at the switches. See to it that you have the wire routed correctly inside the door panel and that the movement of the window is not putting strain on any of the wires or breaking contact.

Humm, tired all that stuff. I still can't get the psgnr window to work correctly. After playing around with the swithes today this is where things left off...

Driver switch inoperatable, passenger switch only works in up position, window goes up, but won't go down. And on occasion this will reverse... so won't go up but will go down...

I thought about it, I reacall last year some loser flattened my driver's side rear tire. I used the OEM air pump to reinflate in the middle of a rain storm. I also reacall the door not fully close while I watied for the tire to re-inflate I'm positive the switches filled up with water.

Possible corrsion or something bad with the switch, but it passed the test in the shop manual? I dunno maybe intermittent, damn hard to find the fault!

Weird I dunno what to do now? Anyone know where I can get a driver's side switch cheap for a 91?

You might want to try some electronic switch cleaner. Radio Shack sells some spray cans for this. The switch is low voltage, high current so corrosion from water could cause the switch to not make a connection. Messing with it may make it connect, then the high current temporarily "clean" the contact. This cycle would repeat. If the cleaner makes it work better, I'd still replace the switch but you would be more confident of what was wrong.
