From talking with a few NSX owners I have come to realize that there are some really good stories of how they acquired their NSX. So, I decided to start a thread to find out just how many of you have one of these stories. By the way, here is mine.....

I had been looking for an NSX for about 3 months. I located 3 of them in Dallas and set up a meetings with each owner for a Saturday morning. I was pretty sure I would buy one of the three, so I went with money in hand.

I caught a 6 a.m flight out of New Orleans to Dallas and arrived about 7:30 a.m. After getting a rental car, I headed out to Exotic Cars ,Inc. where they had a 92 red/black. I had talked with the sales rep the night before and told him I would be there when he opened. After getting lost a couple of times on the interstate, I showed up about 30 minutes after they opened...yep, you guessed it...they sold it 15 minutes before I got there!

I left out and went to meeting number 2. 91- red/black. I actually sent this car to David McDavid Acura a couple of days before my arrival to have it checked out. So when I got there to pick it up from the dealership, they gave me a list of repairs that equalled the loading list on Noah's arc. I really did not want to start out by making $5,000 in repairs, so I baled out on that deal.

By this time I was feeling kind of disgusted and decided to head to TGIFridays for a bite to eat. While I was there, my old business partner, who now lives in Dallas, called me and told me he knew a car broker who knew a doctor that had an NSX for sale. It was not advertised, but the doctor was selling it to buy a Ferrari. He told me the price and it was about $4,000.00 more than what I wanted to pay, but I had time to burn before my last NSX meeting, so I decided to take a look. The broker picked me up and told me the whole story...He wanted the doctor to sell the car because he was the one that had the Ferrari for sale and the doctor would not buy it until he sold the NSX. So we went to this doctors condo. Upon arriving we met his girlfriend who took us down into a basement garage for the tenants. This garage could rival any exotic car dealership I had ever seen. There were Jags, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Mercedes...and oh yes, a really, really, really, nice 92 red/black NSX. I knew right away it was the best looking 92 I had ever seen. The interior and exterior were in perfect condition, so was his girlfriend. Sorry , got off the subject for a second. Anyway, she explained that this was his baby that he never drove and pampered it to death. The only mod was Konig rims. It had 54K miles. The only two owners had been this doctor and his partner. I tried not to salivate too much in front of them because I really wanted this car. So, after looking it over I got the broker to call the doctor on this cell phone...yes, while the doctor had someone split open on the operatin table, so we could cut a deal. I told the doctor I was there with money in hand, I would give him 4K less than what he was asking, I wanted a date with his girlfriend, and I had a flight to catch in one hour. O.K, I didn't throw his girlfrend into the deal! But Yep, he took it simply because he did not want to miss out on the Ferrari deal.

I wrote the check, caught my flight in time, and had the NSX shipped to me the next week.

Also bought mine in Dallas. I was looking around for a sportscar after driving an SUV for 5 years. I had some time to kill and a few different cars that I printed out of autotrader and a few from the paper. I test drove several 911 variants. Later went to that Autolink place off of I-35. They let me drive a nice Viper GTS. I could not believe the torque and acceleration that thing put down. The handling felt pretty good too. They were a bit too greedy and really tried to jack me on my SUV trade. Well, I was later on my way toward Irving, when driving on the highway past Goodson Acura, I saw parked front and center in the lot a Black on Black 1994 NSX. I figured basically “what the heck” that will be another fun test drive. Got to look at the car – totally immaculate, low miles, just came off lease. Before I could even ask, the used car manager comes over and tells the salesguy to let me take it for a spin. Of course, this was my goal for the day, probably not actually looking to buy it.

Well, once I drove it, it made the Viper feel like a big fat silly pig of a car (although I still missed the torque) and it made all the 911’s feel way too tail happy (and overpriced) in comparison. We promptly made a deal including a better price on the trade than I probably could have gotten from anywhere save a private party sale, plus a one year factory pre-owned warranty, plus a brand new set of rear A022’s. In addition, they made me a complete copy of the car’s entire service history, as they were the original selling dealership and had serviced it since new.

They were smart to insist that I drive it. That was really what made the sale for me. I guess I was being more of a typical sports car buyer before that experience, considering only the more obvious sports car choices.

All My NSX'es Live in Texas

There was nothing out of the ordinary with my search/purchase of my '93 red/ivory, the real fun was when I picked it up. I located the car about an hour from home, so I asked my brother to pick me up and drive me to "pick up the used Acura I bought". I guess he was expecting an Integra. The look he had on his face when he saw the NSX and realized it was my car was one I'll never forget
wink.gif

I hunted for a late model NSX for about 6 months. During that time I visited an exotic car dealer in PA who had a 97 red one in "perfect" conditon. When I got there, they would not let me drive the car (only after I buy it), and the condition was good, but far from perfect.

Next, I tried to deal with a recluse who lives on a mountain in one of the southern states. He had a yellow 2000 wil 1200 miles.. wrapped in plastic, that I couldn't drive and he didn't "really" want to sell.

Then I put a down payment on a 2001 red one at Luxury Cars of Palm Beach. Flew down to complete the deal, but it went bad because the dealer didn't have the title (its against the law in FL for a dealer to sell a car for which he does not hold the title). I knew there was trouble because while at the Atlanta airport for a layover, I got a frantic call from the "owner" of the car telling me not to buy it because he was just informed that Honda America Financing who has the title has not been paid for 3 months and is looking to repossess the car.

That was a horrible trip, and by this time I was pretty disgusted and near giving up, then I happned to do an on-line search for a new one, and a new Yellow 2001 came up at Rallye Acura in Long Island. (and I really wanted yellow). I bought it over the phone, took the train up, gave them the check, got the keys, and was on my way home in less than an hour. I think it was the fastest delivery they ever made, and they were a pleasure to do business with.

I've got 2 good stories on 2 different NSX's...

The first was my '91 Red/Ivory Automatic. I had been watching the Trader for a few months and called on/looked at several NSX's in the Florida region. There was one that popped up in the Trader with 7,000 miles and an extremely low price, but I never called on the car, figuring the price was a clue to the condition and they must have rolled the miles back. Curiosity got the best of me, so I called. The owner knew little about the car and seemed kinda flaky, but it was only a 45 minute drive to see the car so I took the trek with a disposition that I was wasting my time. Arriving at this guys house left me with the disposition of an untipped waiter! You see... he lives on the ocean, in Palm Beach, with a 6 car garage and... I felt like I was on welfare! He hit the garage door opener and all 6 doors went up to reveal 6 cars, ALL RED w/ matching Momo Rims, matching Clifford Alarm systems and matching sound sytems. His stable included a Testarossa, 308 GTO, Daytona Spyder, Pantera, Shelby KR500, and ofcourse... one sweet little NSX that was the real thing. ABSOLUTULY PERFECT. Not a blemish to be found. Go figure... this was a 7 year old car! In addition to having an "all red" stable of cars... his wife and his daughter had red hair too. Tell you the truth... I'd have driven his wife too, but I would have driven her hard and put her away wet! :-)

This guy seemed to have more "dollars" than "sense" (pun intended). Being a much poorer man, I had nothing to loose by making a ridiculous offer. Because he was taking delivery on a new Viper GTS (guess what color!), he needed to make room, so the NSX had to go... and it did, with me... for $28,500 in 1997. I sold that car for $37,500 2 years later with 12,000 miles.

My 2nd (and current) NSX (93' red/black)was a sweeter deal. I just bought it a couple of months ago, but I have been looking for nearly a year, while loitering around NSX Prime to keep informed. I found this car on Trader-On-Line, but it wasn't in the Custom & Sports Car Trader. Strange, I thought. As it turns out, it was female owned and she advertised in the Palm Beach County $5000 in Over Trader, which is the wrong market/book for a car like this.

The car was priced far below market and I noticed she had reduced the price even further. Not a good sign. I ventured a call to find out what was wrong with the car (I'm so positive!) and the problem was this... she lived down a 2 mile long *dirt* road way out in the boonies of West Plam Beach.
As it turns out, nobody wanted to drive out to see the car and she was such a miserable ex-Boca Bitch, nobody wanted to deal with her. Well... she just got divorced (wonder why!) and was closing on a new house so... she needed money. She told me a wholesaler had offered X amount of dollars, but had not seen the car. I promptly explained that no wholesaler would buy this car... I pointed out every flaw concievable. When I was done with her, she thought her car was worthless... (you and I know it was perfect and I was foaming at the mouth!) I began to leave showing no signs of interest and she was baffled by this (easy to do to blondes!) I told her I wouldn't buy this car for X amount of dollars or $5000 below that number, even if she got on her knees and _____(you fill in the blank!) She thought for a moment (must have been a blonde moment) and said she would take it! I wrote her a check on the spot, but you'de never recognize my signature, as I was shaking like virgin in the men's locker room. In closing, I bought a '93 with complete books & records, perfect maintenance, garaged and showing no signs of it's mileage... for about the price of... well, let's just say it might be lowest price an NSX ever sold for.

Are you working for a negotiation company or something? Can I bring you along when I purchase my first NSX?? You da Man..

My story proves the old saying about timing is everything.
I sold my RX-7 in 1995 and bought a Ford Probe GT since I was putting every dollar into my business expansion. (Smart move IMHO)
I lurked around this site and others in the early fall of 1999. Did not want to spend more than $40K, but wanted a 1994 or later NSX. Saw a 1994, green & tan but it was priced at about $44K with 39K miles.
One day on a whim, I decided to place a free ad with Autotrader on a Wednesday in October.
Friday a kid from Daytona called, wanted the car and bought it the that Sunday. Now I am sharing a SUV with my wife. Yuk.
Tuesday I went back on line and see the same 1994 NSX that was about $44K now at $37.5K !! Called the guy up in Houston. He said he lowered the price because he had to buy an automatic NSX for the Houston traffic. Told him I would fly up on Thursday with certified funds. Car was excellent with just the usual front stone chips and slightly mangled front spoiler. I thought I didn't like green until I saw this green. Noon on Thursday I'm on I-10 heading back to Tampa; smiled for one and 1/2 days on the road back home even though it rained most of the trip.
Timing is everything. So is this car!!!

Let's see...

My saga started in 1986, when reports of a Honda supercar first appeared in the media. Rumors were of a twin-turbo V-8 at the then-unheard-of price (for a Japanese car) of $25,000. So I put down a deposit with a high-volume Acura dealer in New York. By 1988, it appeared that the car was still a couple of years off, so I got my deposit back.

Around September 1, 1990, the car came out, and if you wanted to buy one, you had to pay $80-90K. No thanks. I had deposits at three dealers at that point. I spoke to each periodically, but we were too far apart on our price negotiations. I went to another dealer and they tried wasting my time by telling me why I should pay their price, thousands more than the offers I had already received. Idiots - and twelve years later, I'll still never go there or recommend them (Arlington Acura).

One of the dealers with whom I was negotiating knew I was serious, and I preferred them anyway because I had bought several cars from their sister dealership. Right before the end of the year (and the imposition of the luxury tax), they made me an offer I couldn't pass up.

A few years later they told me that was the lowest mark-up they had ever sold an NSX for. (Apparently they had bought it from another dealer.) I've enjoyed it ever since.

This is my only buying story concerning the NSX. Went one of only 2 Acura dealers hear in Kansas City. Had a pretty good relationship with one of the salesman, as I had leased and/or purchased 6 other Acura's from him since 91. Here is a list of my ?'s to the salesman & GM.
Q-1)Whats the history and where is it from.
Answer-Some rich guy from Chicago moved hear and traded it on a RL. We took it in trade and cleaned it up abit because it needed it. We replaced the clutch, tires, repainted the front, new chin spoiler and alittle body work.

Q-2)Can I get the service history from the 1st owner. Answer- Oh well we would have to check on that if your really interested. I say, well red isn't my 1st choice, black is but I call live with it @ the right price.

Then the GM leaves his office for a second.

Q-3)To the salesman,What are you asking ? Answer-$54,900, I say you gotta be kidding me, your overpriced. GM comes back in and says were asking $52,900 and with that I see a
redface.gif
look on the salesmans face. I say, he just told me 54,900 so which is it! The GM says if your cash i'll go $52,900. Sorry I said, I don't expect this from a dealership in which I have had a relationship in the past and this doesn't cut it. The salesman and I had a good heart to heart as I bolted. The car sat on the lot for 2 months and I saw it on AutoTrader for 49k finally.

Two weeks later I found my car on this site. It was the best buying experience in my life bar none and the car was 1200 miles away in the color I wanted and fairly priced.

Then several weeks ago I went to talk to the service manager at the same dealership to get some price quotes. Another salesman comes out and is asking ?'s about my car. He's a nice young guy and tells me about the red 96 he just sold. I get it out of him that they sold it for $52,500. No great story, but it tells you that some dealers really do find someone that will pay what they want most of the time.

That's the one I bought!!!

Maybe not the greatest "deal" story but maybe the record for shortest time between starting to look and driving home:

I have wanted an NSX since '91 but could never come close to affording one. I eventually (1999) ended up with a MR2 Turbo (I loved that car). Then a friend let me drive an NSX he was test driving. The MR2 went up for sale the next day. No takers. Then about 6 months later my brother (whom I live with) asks if I have been looking for an NSX. I said "not really" (because I still had the MR2). He said "well start looking" - he was going to buy my MR2! This was on a Thursday.

Friday I printed all of the NSXs for sale I could find on the internet, figuring I would have to go th California or Florida to find a car (I live in Michigan). Near the bottom of one list was a '91 for sale IN MICHIGAN! Not only in Michigan, but less than an hour from my house! I called, and the man answered "Dart's Collision". My heart sank.
frown.gif
I asked if the car had been in a accident. The man said "Oh no! It's my car - I am just selling it to help pay for a new house".
smile.gif
To make a long story short; Thursday-Start Looking, Friday-Call the man, Saturday-Test Drive the car, Sunday-Make an offer, Monday-Offer accepted!
biggrin.gif
, Wednesday-Pick up car. Total time elapsed since "starting to look" to "driving it home", less than one week!

The car is in the color I wanted, not in the snap ring range, and had just had the 120k mile service done, (at 103k) and even had a new clutch.

Oh, I paid about $7,000.00 less than I had budgeted! Here is a picture (after some mods - wheels, tires, lowered, tinted)

'91 Black/Black

Michigan NSX,

Great story and awesome looking car. Just curious, I know the reliability factor of the car...but based on your own experience, how has the car held up with your current mileage? I ask, cause I will be getting one soon with about 115K miles (shipped from virginia). The car has new clutch, seals, valve adjustments, window reg. new amp, the whole nine yards except timing belt and water pump.

Just wanted to know, any difference in driving a high mileage well taken care of nsx compared to a low mileage one of the same year?? If anyone can comment on this question, it would be great as well.

Thanks,
Khue

In 1997, I spent six months looking for my NSX. After searching through pages and pages of auto classified website links, I found one website listing a silver '91 NSX with 10K miles. Started to email and chat with the owner on the phone. This car was located in Fargo, ND. He wanted a bit more than what I'd pay so I offered slightly less and we came halfway, which was acceptable to me, that is, *IF* the car was in the condition it was claimed to be. I had a fellow NSX enthusiast check out the car for me and got back a three page report. It was nearly perfect! I bought tickets and my friend and I flew to Fargo with the intention of driving the car back. My complete story is here:
http://northwest.nsxca.org/fargo.html

After I bought the car, I met a former silver NSX owner who was looking to buy another one (sold his earlier). He saw my car and asked me where I got it. I said in Fargo. His jaw nearly dropped. He said he was ready to buy the car but had to cancel his arrangement to go on a lengthy business trip. He couldn't believe that I bought the car from under his nose.

He offered to buy it from me but I declined. I like this car too much. To date, I had five offers on the car -- all declined.

BTW, I still keep in touch with the prior owner after five years. He regreted selling the car but doesn't feel so bad since he knows the car is being well taken care of. Says he's always looking at the website to make sure I have updated pictures of my car.

My story is the best because its the freshest! Just brought it home less than an hour ago!!!!!!!!
No real quirks to story but I think I got a good deal - it was listed on NSXPrime, 93 with less than 15K miles and I got it for 4K less than minimum seller was prepared to let it go for!(& I think a pretty good deal - it needs a few bits n pieces but minor stuff)Was local here in Bay area so able to go check it out & make deal on the spot.
Very, very happy latest member of the owners club!

Khue,

The recommended maintenance interval on the timing belt and water pump is 90K miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. Some owners are stretching the time interval when they have less than 90K miles, and that's risky. But stretching the mileage interval is downright stupid. Once you reach that mileage interval, timing belts break and cause expensive damage. Replace yours IMMEDIATELY!

I love this topic! It gives me so much inspiration.
