Because of a recent promotion, I'll most likely be moving to San Jose in January. I'm looking for 1br apartments/small homes with garages in good areas. I'll be working in Sunnyvale, so I'm looking for places in these areas:

- Santa Clara
- Mountain View
- Cupertino
- South San Jose
- Campbell

Any other areas I should be looking at? Anyone looking to rent their place? Let me know, thanks.

I used to live in that area and if you want to stick to the good areas I would suggest looking in Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

From Wikipedia:
Sunnyvale has consistently ranked as one of the safest ten cities (for cities of similar size) in the United States according to the FBI's crime reports.

Long,

South San Jose commute will suck.

Cupertino shares border with Sunnyvale. Cupertino is densely populated with Chinese/Taiwanese and as you can imagine, their businesses, if that's what you are looking for. Cupertino doesn't have a downtown. They have Sheriffs here that are OK. Since there are "rice-mobiles" that troll around the cops already have a prejudice attitude with modified cars, etc.

Los Altos shares boarder with Sunnyvale and is scenic and practically no crime. Cops here are one of the most laid back. I never got any crap for smoked out tails, 5% window tint on driver side, no front plates, modified exhaust, etc. A lot of them like cars and have some nice ones themselves and talk about cars in great detail. As long as you're not doing stupid things like street racing or speeding around kids, schools, bike lanes, etc. most of the time they give a verbal warning. If i got pulled over from a Los Altos cop, it's usually a newbie that doesn't know the laid back culture of the town.

As a matter of fact, the people in Los Altos behave as if it was 1950's where they seldom lock their house and car doors, let the kids roam around freely, etc.

Car and renter's insurance usually are lower as a result of living in Los Altos.

Sunnyvale has 1 block for a downtown, if you call it that. The cops are also firemen half the time. The cops used to be assholes back in the day, but are much more laid back. Almost as laid back as Los Altos.

What's your budget?

Is apt a must have or would you consider something baller like this?

Really depends on what you are looking for. I've lived in every city in Silicon Valley with a 408 area code with the exception of Cupertino and Saratoga. Are you looking to be close to night life, or do you like quiet neighborhoods? Where is your work location? You may also want to think about your commute route. Certain routes are better than others when heading into Sunnyvale if you don't live in Sunnyvale. What is the maximum commute time are you willing to endure? Have you thought about West San Jose? Commuting from West San Jose is much better than from South San Jose to Sunnyvale.

Long,

For commuting purpose, I refer to South San Jose as North L.A.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.

I'm looking for a relatively quiet area where I won't have to worry about punk kids messing around with my cars. I've been looking and found a few places in Santa Clara and Cupertino, all with garages.

Not much of a bar/club guy, but I have friends and family that will go coffee shops/downtown SJ/Santana Row quite a bit. So I can always kick it with them, but I'd rather live in a nice and quiet community with nice roads. Also would like to throw some shindigs at my place for some beer-pong and drinks. Garage is a must for the NSX.

Reason why I didn't include Sunnyvale is because that's where my office is located. I'd rather not be the closest one to the office in case something happens. Lingering fears from the military.

Bats, thanks for that place. Baller status would be awesome, but that one is a little too small. I will contact him to ask if there is an available garage with the place. I will definitely look into Los Altos.

Slamstrom, I definitely know what you're talking about. I stayed with my cousins for a couple months off I-85 and Cottle Rd. I HATED 101/85 traffic. Up until Capitol or Tully exit. Then it cleared up. I've tried different routes like Lawrence-->280-->17-->85, 101-->87-->85, and so on. They all end up to be around 45+ mins to south san jose.

U certainly dun need to worry about anything happening to ur car in Los Altos/Los Altos Hills. Downtown LA has starbucks, peets, etc. It's such a high end place they don't allow 7/11, Mcdonalds, etc.

What's nice about both LA and LAH is that it's buffered by lower/upper middle-class cities like Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Palo Alto.

In other words it's not one of those wealthy places that share a border with the "hood" if u catch my drift.

What's ur budget?

Since I'll be only renting, I don't want to spend too much money. Still saving up for a house. Anyways, it's $1700 for a 1 bd/1 ba apartment/condo/townhome etc. I understand amenities are extra, and I'm not worried about that.

And I'll probably be up in San Jose for 1yr+

Fair enough, but don't discount the joys of a short commute. Getting around in the south bay can be a bitch and a half. I recently went from a 40 minute commute to five minutes, and having that extra hour in the day has sincerely enhanced my quality of life.

+1 to this advice.

So many times have I been commuting in the past and wishing I could be so much more productive with that wasted time.

So it's for sure now that I'm going to norcal. Most likely moving to a townhouse/condo in Los Altos. Hope to see you all soon.

When is the move date? I think BATMANs is free that day.

I'll be commuting between Los Altos and Sunnyvale. Not too bad of a drive. And I still need to look at the places, but there is one near downtown, and a few others on the outskirts of Los Altos. Either way, it'll be a heck of a lot better commuting between Los Altos and Sunnyvale, than anywhere and SJ.
