I use a Garmin iQue 3600 handheld GPS. It is actually a fully functional PalmOS PDA with built in GPS. They also make a Windows version. It provides audible voice and moving map instructions, contains thousands of searchable points of interest, and has a full screen portrait format display (which I think is more logical than the usual landscape format). Having used it extensively for over 2 years I find it to have most of the features of an OEM navigation system and yet is highly portable and multi-functional.

Garmin (www.garmin.com) specializes in GPS for marine, aviation, and consumer and they have a wide variety of GPS devices available. They have one that is slightly smaller than the TomTom, much less expensive, and yet very highly rated (higher than the TomTom in some comparison tests). You can see it at your local Circuit City store.

Here is a photo of the Garmin in my NSX:

I am using the included Garmin cradle (it charges and has an amplified speaker for the voice instructions). I modified the cradle to attach to the A/C vents using a portion of a cell-phone mount. The cradle is easily detachable and is stowed in my glove box when not in use.

I did place an external GPS antenna under the rear hatch but I find that it isnt really necessary as the Garmin's built-in antenna is quite good.

I have the Navman iCN 510. It cost me about $500. Voice controlled, multi map display options and you can even put in avoid areas to direct around traffic. I like the option of it being able to find the nearest POI along the route i.e., fast food, gas or hotel. It is real easy to switch it from car to car. It mounts on the window via a suction cup. Definitely a good bargain for its price. Oh, forgot to mention if you are getting something like this, make sure you get enough memory to hold the maps. I bought a 512mb card. This is able to hold most of the states from NY to FL. I think each state is roughly about 20-50mb.

Hi.

I have a Treo 650 w/ TomTom and it's fantastic! I highly recommend it. Feel free to post back with any questions.

I have a Treo 650 as well. I almost forgot we can do that. What do you do when you get a phone call while trying to use it for navigation

Bought my wife the Magellan 760 for about $900, don't have to have "enough memory", comes preloaded with the full 48 states, the newer 800 even has PR. My wife likes it so much, she even made the statement (since retracted) that "it's better than jewelry"!!!! This unit is as good as the factory one that my Lexus has- JMHO:biggrin:

The Garmin 2700 series I am told has integrated xm radio that broadcasts with the help of an fm modulator through car stereo. You'll get weather and traffic as wel as the route. I use an older Garmin product called the Street Pilot 3. It has been very reliable. I use it in my car and motorcycle.

I have the magellan roadmate 760 and absolutely love it! Very similar to the factory Nav in my wifes Lexus and my Toyota Sequoia. I literally opened the package, put it in the car and haven't even read the directions yet, as it's that easy to use. My only gripe is the screen size, which could be a slightly bigger. The prompts are both on the screen and voice. With 7 million pre-programmed points of interests, you'll always have somewhere to go. With no worries, I bought it at my favorite store with the lifetime return policy. If you are in the market and are not sure, take a test drive on one and buy it at Costco

I got the Tomtom 700 for Christmas. So far, I am VERY impressed. The screen in nice and bright. Has been very accurate and even has the little side streets. Automatically re-routes if you miss a turn. The voice gives plenty of warning about upcoming turns but not too intrusive.

Ive got two, a Garmin Streetpilot III Deluxe and a Garmin 2610.

The 2610 is a newer generation. I find it much much much better than the SPIII, although they make use of the same maps (which I find are great).

Never any problems with either and the software updates keep coming.
