I have always enjoying taking my friend's 2005 911 C4 for a spin, it is a fantastic car. However, I have always heard the reliability and built quality of P cars not being top notch. By driving it, the car does felt like put together wonderfully...

All that changed yesterday. He was driving his 911 to school; the moment he got off the freeway, he couldn't get the car beyond first gear and the car refused move more than 20mph. The engine started to click; he immediately parked the car and celled me while the car was towed to the nearest Porsche dealer. A quick inspection by the dealer confirmed my suspicion; a new engine is needed (I had the same sound from my 01 S2k two years ago). A bearing broke off from the engine and caused leak in engine oil - oil starvation killed it!!! The pistons got fried and scrapped the cylinder walls.

The car had 11k miles… Porsche USA is going to install a new engine for him. He was a Porsche enthusiast and has always preached Porsche cars. He was very much heart broken yesterday and I doubt he will buy another Porsche again.

I’m sure what happened to his car was not a common case, but a new engine is not exactly what he had in mind at 11k miles. Perhaps he will be a NSX owner soon, after all, he always want to trade car with me for a day.

Ouch - that hurts, but who among us wouldn't want the manufacturer to step up when there is a major problem like this, and Porsche is doing just that. He'll have a brand new engine and everything will be fine. I'd be severely disappointed, but I'd also realize that this is an isolated event.

BTW, I do own a 911 Cab and I follow any issues that Porsche owners have to deal with. Aside from a fairly common RMS problem, most 911s are pretty damn stout. Sometimes the luck of the draw works against you, though.

I was thinking the same thing. Just because it has a major problem doesn't mean you should write off the manufacturer. Sounds like they are doing the right thing and taking care of it. Could be a lot worse.

I do agree, my 01 S2k, which I no longer own had oil starvation problem, Honda raplaced the Lower block for me on Honda Care at 66 k miles no charge. As for my friend's Porsche, it's going to take them over a month to get it fix, and they wouldn't get him a loaner car. He's pertty bumm about it, specially his little bro just got a brand new SLK55 the day before his incident.

I'm not a Porsche person, but I sure enjoyed his car when we swapped for a day couple of months ago.

Now I do understand that frustration. I have heard the same from a friend that owns a Cayenne. Took it in for warranty concerns and they offered to call Enterprise and get him a reduced rate on a Focus!!
