Pliers "tool" for window fixit thingies

Question.... If you have a partner helping to hold up the window when you go to insert both the cable ends into the new fixit thingy, do you still need the "slotted" pliers?

Thanks
Based on the write-up, yes. Your friend holding the window would only eliminate the use of taping the window down to prevent it from slipping into the door jamb. As long as you keep the tension off, it might work

Hmm, it's possible I misunderstood the FAQ write-up. When the window has been taped and the old plastic connector is removed, the tape prevents the whole window from sliding into the door. However my understanding is that no tape job can prevent the window from dropping a couple millimeters, so the cable becomes "short" by that much when you go to slip it into the new fixit thingy. My question is really pointed at whether or not the pliers are used only to overcome that tension by brute force (ie put enough force on the wire to haul up the window those couple millimeters). I recall reading somewhere that if you get a friend at that point to lift the window slightly, the cable will again reach the fixit thingy and will slip right in. Then I guess there is the other end of the cable to slot into the bottom part of the fixit thingy.

I don't have access to a grinder so creating my own "tool" is going to be a bit of a PITA. I'm hoping I can get away without it if I have a 2nd set of hands for slipping the cable into the new fixit thingy. Of course I don't want to take everything apart, only to find that I will need them anyway. Anyone done the job without the pliers?

Thanks.

i tried installing the thingies without modifying a pair of pliers. it sucked. i pulled out the dremel half way through and cut up a pair of crappy channel locks. i was working alone.

some one helping could be good and bad. if holding up the window helps 'loosen' the cable, go for it. however, there is only enough room in the door area for 1 person. another person will probably not be able to help situate the cable...

If you remove the window mechanizm from the door you can do it without it, but this is really pointless. It is a 20 minute job with the tool, hours without it:).

Is anyone anywhere near Anaheim, CA? My damn window fell down and I don't have a damn mechanical bone in my body. I'm serious, I can't even change the oil, that's how bad I am. My passenger's side window fell down. And I'm pretty sure its the window thingy that needs to be replaced. Any help? 50 Bucks to the guy who can help me. If they say you can do it in 20 minutes, thats like 150/hour. Please I'm very desperate, are there any good samaritans out there   call me at 714-724-7905 or pm me or email me at [email protected]

Yeah, the pliers work great. I don't see that lifting/holding the window would help.

I don't think I could have done it (especially alone) without the pliers. I would consider spending some effort on creating them.

Suggestion: Buy the pliers (channel-lock type, large size). They can be a cheap pair, $4-5. Go somewhere where someone would have a grinder/cutoff tool/saw. Try a muffler shop, welding shop, metal supply store...

If the window dropped, it's too late. Replacing the window thingy will not help. When the window drops the wire unravels in the spool and nothing has proven to work. There are a lot of threads on this issue. The only fix is a whole new window regulator - about $500 if you use a NSX club discount at a dealer that support the discount

When I did the job last year, I did make the slotted channel locks tool but unfortunately misjudged the position of the thing in the door cutout, so I had some trouble getting the channel locks into the right position to pull the cable in. I ended up having to clamp a vice grip onto the cable higher up and reef downward to get enough slack to back to slip the cable head into the notch. So I am standing (typing?) before you that it can be done, but I certainly agree that having the slotted channel locks makes it 10x easier.

Does anyone have a picture of how to modify the channel locks and where to make this cut so it would work right ?

Ohhhh... you knew someone was gonna tell you to look in the FAQ: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/DIY/thingy_install.htm :D

The picture of the channel locks there is exactly what you want. You don't need more than 1/4 - 3/8 " of a slot.

In case I wasn't clear, the notch in the channel locks isn't what I screwed up. I had the window positioned too high before I started, so the plastic thingy was too LOW in the door cutout "window" (see pic 3 in the FAQ link). It looked initially like I had enough room but you have to kind of maneuver in from underneath when you're pulling the top cable down into the new aluminum fixit thingy. I didn't have enough clearance to have the channel locks angled the way they needed to be. In fact, if you look at that picture 3, just imagine if the thingy was another inch lower in its travel. It does not slide straight up and down, it is on an incline, so the further down it is, the closer it is to the edge of the metal window. It LOOKS like you can easily get at it but look where the handles of the channel locks are....that's where I ran into an interference problem. HTH.

If your window has already fell, it may be too late for a simple fix.

Yes this is what I thought you had a problem with ..." the notch in the pliers "
and yes I was too lazy to look but I knew I seen a pic of it somewhere before.
