I am going to rent 10+ DVDs over the weekend, and just relax with my wife (have been working crazy hours).

Could you please recommend some great movies? Thank you!

What kind of movies do you and your wife like? I'm not that in tune with the current movies, but I really liked Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers if you're into sci-fi or fantasy at all.

Here's a site with current DVDs and reviews:

http://www.currentfilm.com/dvdindex.html

Enjoy the quality time with your wife!

Just bought that movie last night! Awesome! I'd suggest buying this one and the 1st movie as well.

Some ones I've seen that I liked recently:

- Count of Monte Cristo (the new one)
- Swingers (not a porno)
- 40 Days and 40 Nights

Can't go wrong with:

- Patriot Games
- Last of the Mohicans
- A River Runs Through It
- The Fifth Element

Enjoy your time!

Here are my recomendations; I tried to think of lesser-mentioned good flicks that you wouldn't necessarily stumble across at blockbuster.

For good filmmaking:
The Shawshank Redemption
The Sting

For your need for speed:
The Original Gone in 60 Seconds
The Right Stuff

For Sci-Fi:
12 Monkeys
The 5th Element

For the wife (that you'll also enjoy):
The Princess Bride
Casablanca

Comedy:
Blazing Saddles
Hot Shots!

Classics:
Braveheart
Raiders of the Lost Ark

How could I ever forget The Princess Bride? "Anybody want a peanut?"

The Princess Bride and Casablanca - two of my favorites of all time!

Don't overlook the indies:

Sling Blade
I Shot Andy Warhol
Bloody Sunday
No Man's Land (the one directed by Danis Tanovic)
Snatch
Memento
Diner
Clerks
Any movie done by John Sayles (such as Matewan or Secret of Roan Inish)

Or foreign:

Cinema Paradiso
Il Postino
Amelie

Or "mockumentary":

Best in Show
Waiting for Guffman

Or "alternative" viewing (if you have a good surround sound system):

Koyaanisqatsi

Movies on DVD

Yong, try checking www.imdb.com for reviews and releases on DVD. I have a home theatre and even with satelite, cable, and the like, I still end up renting a few each weekend. This weekend I'll probably watch the US Open for part of the time. Good viewing, and hopefully you'll enjoy whatever you watch, since you'll be watching it with your lovely bride:)

Thanks for your time, guys, once agains!! I think that my wife and I are pretty much all set: some romantic comedies, some indies, some actions, some oldies, and some sci-fis!

Haha.. thank you so much!! Please have a great weekend, too. I am sure that you miss your daughter so much, but hopefully, the US Open matches (and your NSX) will provide some solace to your heart :)

If she likes cars or racing there is a former Imax movie called Super Speedway that is a must see!

Also, swingers was a great call, that movie is money baby!

Uh...the DVD won't be out for another month or two...

Here's just a few off the top of my head (I'll second the motion for the Princess Bride...one of my all-time faves)

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Sci-fi:
Blade Runner

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
The Matrix

Comedy/sci-fi:
Back to the Future
Galaxy Quest

Animation:
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Shrek
Antz
Monsters Inc.
Beauty and the Beast

Anime:
Akira (of course)

Foreign:
Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai

Musicals:
Singing in the Rain

Epic:
Gladiator
Spartacus

Romance/comedy:
When Harry Met Sally

BTW, the four disc set of LOTR: The Fellowship of the Rings is my favorite set in my entire DVD collection

Tiger,

If you're going to do a movie marathon, you have to include some hits from the 80's! It just wouldn't be the same without some reminiscent flicks, just for kicks!

Big Trouble in Little China
The Last Dragon
Top Gun
Top Secret!
Big
Beverly Hills Cop
Drop Dead Fred
Chariots of Fire
The Breakfast Club

Blame it on Rio
<--- ok maybe not that one! :D

for lord of the ring series, i'd wait for the 4 discs versions. the extended versions are much better.

i actually bought the 2 disc set when it first came out. then i borrowed my friend's 4 disc set...an extra 30 minutes i believe. the story flowed a lot better than the one they released in the theaters. i wonder why they do that....

normally we think of extended version as adding in deleted scenes, but this version was quite different. it contained scenes that were altered from the theatrical version.

Maybe I'm too late, but I'll throw in a few:

Gross Point Blank
The Usual Suspects
Wing Chun (aka Yong Chun, an excellent, yet bloodless martial arts film starring Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen)
Iron Monkey
Animal House
Midnight Run
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Somewhere in Time (for those special tear jerking moments for the wife ;) )

i don't believe it... why rent all these other movies when
there's only one worth watching: GETAWAY IN STOCKHOLM 3. :D

...or for some variety, Aliens, Saving Private Ryan, Tomorrow Never Dies, Black Hawk Down, or some of the other titles on my shelf.

i guess you should get some chick-flicks too for your wife...

Akira, you have excellent taste!

Fury, I doubt many folk remember "Mad World", its a real classic and you are to be commended.

I would add to the list of older classics

For me: Cars

Hollywood Knights-gotta love those classic cars.
Bullitt-Steve McQueen double clutching the Mustang.

For her & me:

Tin Cup-Cosner for her, humor w/good story & Cheech.
Steel Magnolia's-Chick flick all the way w/great one liners.

After she goes to bed; I watch

Conan the Barbarian-You just can't beat watching Arnold S. smashing the skulls of Pagan idol worshipers in the pre-governor flick.

16 Candles & Wierd Science, 1941 & Caddy Shack. Oldies, but still enjoyable.

Field of Dreams
Caddy Shack
Animal House
Training Day
Gump
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
About Schmidt
Braveheart
Band of Brothers collection
The Shawshank Redemption
Spartacus
Hoosiers
L.A. Confidential

I'm probably dating myself, ain't I? ;)

It's actually one of my all time favorite movies. It's awesome to watch classic comedians, all doing their thing. No sex jokes, no fart jokes, no blood. Just good clean silliness!! The scene that really sticks out in my mind is the one with a young Jonathan Winters beating the crap out of two gas attendants and their gas station. :D
