Hi Everyone,

Well I'd like to say that I have enough track experience to know better regarding this matter but I guess I don't. I've participated in several autocrosses in my S2000 and now tried it this past weekend in the NSX.

What I forgot to think about was using the correct lug nuts on my stock 91 rims and accidentally used nuts from my aftermarket rims...

So...what happened?

I didn't post pictures because there's nothing to see but I almost lost my right rear passenger rim and tire after starting my second run in Autosprint. Just a few seconds after I started to accelerate I heard a loud wobbling like noise and immediately thought - flat tire. Nope...how about a wheel wanting to come loose off the hub!!! Luckily the wheel never came off but the damage has been done and I believe i'll need a new rear hub. At 20k/hr the wheel is aggressively wobbling and none of the others seem to be affected.

Had the NSX towed to a mate's service center and now I'm awaiting to hear what needs to be replaced. I'm having the shop check all of my hubs in case.

I just can't believe I forgot about something so basic and I thought I'd post to educate others if they didn't know already.

Cheers,

Yup. The area where the lug nuts and wheels come into contact is called the seating area, or seat. You need lug nuts whose seating area is the same shape as that of the wheels. Stock lug nuts and wheels use a ball-shaped seating area; aftermarket wheels have a conical/tapered seating area and need lug nuts with the same shape seat.

Since they're wobbling now, it's quite possible that it bent one or more lugs, which means you would only need to replace the lug(s) rather than the entire hub.

Good luck.

I almost had that same problem but luckily the guy that sold me my wheels asked and then informed me that my old lug nuts weren't going to work. I believe they call them "tuner lugs" and they're not as big around but are angled on the bottom as you said.
