I guess I'll wait until spring for this instead of picking up a PS2 now. Any guesses on the price? I'm thinking $400-$500.

yeap....I can't wait to upgrade to the PS3...

Wait I can see it.... Masses of people waiting in lines at Eletronic Boutiques and Babbages. Circuit Cities and Best Buys being looted 24 hours before release date and billions of people across the world being enslaved by Sony's new PS3. What's next? PS4 with artificial intelligence? Damn that thing is nuts! Beautiful design too, looks like a piece of art  They have out done themselves this time as usual.

VISION GRAN TURISMO in 1080p!!! This looks like a really early demo using pre-existing assets from GT4 simply upping the number of cars and animated people in the scenes without any change of detail (Polyphony Digital did something similar for PS2's debut, and GT3 ended up looking waaaaay better). Their point was well made!

Are there any TV's that even support 1080p??? Most that I have seen are all 720p.

Anyway, it does look very sweet. I look forward to a comparison between it and Xbox360.

It sounds like the technology in Xbox360 will be a year or more infront of the PC. Looks like I finally need to buy a console :(

Gamespot has the entire Sony Press Conference clip...its nearly 2 hours long, but shows a LOT of impressive stuff (especially the Fight Night Round 3 and Unreal 3 demos). Sorry Xbox360...you're Media Extending and Live features are definitely compelling, but I have many more reasons for waiting until PS3.

And I'm glad I haven't upgraded to HDTV yet...1080P BABY! The first have only just hit the market...but more will come.

BTW, here's Vision Gran Turismo in motion. The backgrounds are defninitely just a port from GT4...it's the number of cars and pit crew folk that makes the difference in this demo

And while Microsoft hasn't confirmed if XBox360 is backwards compatible, the PS3 will play games all the way back to the original Playstation if that floats your boat.

Link is not working.

I have seen the screen shots of Project Gotham Racing 3 on Xbox360. OMG! It is amazing.

I may need another copy of GT4 for the PS3 (since I'll be able to play it via LAN with my PS2's GT4...direcly plugged into the hub built-in to the PS3). And I'll still be able to use my Driving Force Pro....and 1080i when I get an HDTV. Backward compatibility rules!

What do you think these units cost to make? My guess is between $1200-$2000 each.

Eric

What's the difference between 1080i HDTV and 1080p?

1080i is interlaced (meaning interleaved fields like conventional television), 1080p is progressive-scan (full frames). Progressive allows for a more stable film-like image...interlacing tends to break up high motion images in an ugly way. I'd rather play 480p over 480i any day. 720p versus 1080i become a bit more complicated since we're talking two very different resolutions -1280x720p versus 1920x1080i (540 lines per field), but 1920x1080p will definitely outshine them all.

Try the link again.

One is interlaced, one it progressive. Progressive is better.

720p looks better than 1080i.

I'm guessing that this tech demo had no artist time...those are the exact same low poly people from GT4. I never noticed before, but it appears those characters have lighting baked into their textures. I guess they needed to make them as cheap as possible to squeeze them into GT4.

I am guessing that video is all Intro graphics stuff, not actualy gameplay. Even GT3 had great intro graphics. The in-game graphics sucked. I want to see actualy game play for both Xbox360 and PS3

I highly doubt it...overall, it's still a game console....$300-$500 tops!!

They will sell for $300-$500. They is not what I asked. I asked how much they actually cost to make. MS took huge losses on the first Xbox console.

I'm pretty sure this particular demo is all real-time (otherwise, why wouldn't they use the higher poly count people that appear in GT4's intro?). This also marks the first time we've seen more than six cars in any Gran Turismo game (intro or otherwise). And, NetViper, the intro graphics from GT3 (after the real footage) were rendered straight from the game's replays...which hardly sucked.

I can't say the same for all the demos shown in the press conference, but Sony showed several that were definitely running real-time (specifically were demonstrated as being interactive) and those were far more impressive visually (Fight Night Round 3, Unreal 3, and a real-time recreation of the pre-rendered intro sequence from Final Fantasy VII...which looked even better than the original).

Hmmm...I wonder if this will be playable on the floor at E3 tomorrow. As I recall, GT2000 (GT3) was playable at the first E3 for PS2.

I have no idea about the price point...a device with a Gigabit Ethernet Hub, Wi-Fi, AND Bluetooth access, SD/CF/Memory Stick reading, 6 USB2.0 ports, dual HDMI ports, and BluRay playback capability surely won't come cheap. Oh, and it plays games too! :D

Yeah it definitely looks sweet! I'm looking forward to Grand Turismo 5 on it (in spite of the fact that they're using our competitors graphics chip hehe).

BTW, here are some game screenshots from the new XBox360, which will be out this fall:

I was gonna say... u being the ATI rep around here, u should be in the xbox 360 fan club. Twice the graphics performance of 2 6800Ultras in SLI for the PS3 :O not bad. So when are we gonna see these next gen GPUs for the PC?

Rumors say the standard xbox360 will cost $300 and the HDD version will be $360. Based on that I'd expect the PS3 to be 350-400. Probably costing them 500-600 to make initial, but it's standard practice in the industry to take a hit on hardware sales in order to increase sales volume.

I can't wait, these systems are gonna be amazing. The PS3 dual video out is an awesome idea imo. Imagine one output for your 16:9 TV and a 2nd output for a touchscreen LCD that you put within arms reach. You could choose weapons, view maps, inventory, etc and make selections from the 2nd screen. Lots of cool stuff they could do.

I have a lot more respect for Sony's marketing approach than MS's so far. MS's teeny bopper, MTV debut and leaking info/image to get people excited for months seems very childish. Maybe I'm just becoming an old man at age 25  , but for an impressive $300-400 piece of hardware MS should show a little more class.

Evidently many at the mtv opening were there for the party, some had no idea what the 360 was! Counting down, time to pre-order :D Would have been nice to see a 'classy' unveiling, for us not to so teeny boppers.
