PS2.

-I can use my old games, old controllers, old memory cards, etc.

-I believe it has better "upgradability/expandability." It has two USB ports and a Firewire port. You can also easily add the future harddrive/etc peripherals.

-Bigger following. You know the support will be there.

-Looks better.

-DVD Player out of the box.

-Gran Turismo 3

-and more...

I've always been a PS/PS2 fan but somehow, I don't play them anymore after I got my Xbox.

Xbox does have its advantages. It has video options to optimize best quality pictures. Since I've a widescreen HDTV, I'm really glad that Xbox support widescreen mode up to 1080 progressive lines. That's something PS2 can never do. Plus Xbox has an AWESOME screensaver when playing music CDs.

Conclusion, Xbox is definitely a better system than PS2 and its only flaw is the design of the controllers (even the controller S is pretty crappy compared to the dual shock 2). However, Innovation has made an adaptor that allows us to use Dual Shock 2 to play Xbox games and it's 100% compatible. Now, that's the perfect combination, playing Halo with DS2.

For experience sake, you should get both systems. Now that they've both lowered the price to $199.99, I don't see why shouldn't anyone get both. I bought them both when they were $299.99 and to me, it's worth every penny.

I got an X-Box over a PS2 because the graphics and gameplay were better. I figured it was just a matter of time before the X-Box had a pretty large game selection.

I bought my original PS just so I could play Gran Turismo/Gran Turismo2. I would not buy any game system that didn't support the GT series of games!

Same here. That's pretty much the only reason I bought the original PS. GT and GT2 were the only games that I bought for it.

When the PS2 came out, I bought it immediately, waiting patiently for GT3 to come out. It took awhile, so I did buy other games (for the first time).

You can't go wrong with PS2 or XBox. I'd choose PS2 just because of the GT Series.

I think there's a machine out there that cost around $300 that can play all the major consol's games, including the PS2, X-Box, Game Cube...etc...

Are they going to start making same games for X-box and PS2 like they did for PS and Sega? PS2 has more games that i would probably like but Xbox seems better quality. hmmm It'd be nice if they came out with GT3 on xbox.

Of course, I know you guys will all think that my opinion has been colored by my success working for a division of Sony, but I have not really seen nor played anything on X-Box that makes me want to own one (HALO being the only exception). That includes their entire lineup at this year's E3. Gameplay better on the X-Box? Definitely not with THEIR controller.

Obviously I own a PS2 and even have a couple of first generation PlayStations around the house...and I do own a GameCube and a Gameboy Advance. I have a stack of unbeaten games that I've been itching to get back to but haven't had the time to play through...so I have little interest in picking up ANOTHER game system.

Hell...I've probably played GT3 more than any game in my collection and I'm still only 60% complete. Definitely the best racing series on any game system...and nothing even comes close on GameCube or X-Box.

I should add that few games have exhibited the horrible aliasing problems that made everyone scream during the early days of PS2. And Sony demonstrated several games supporting progressive scan televisions at this year's E3.

Pros of X-Box:
+More powerful processor
+More impressive graphics hardware
+More memory (especially texture RAM)
+Built-in harddrive and networking capability
+Cater more to hardcore gamers

Cons of X-Box:
-Bigger
-Horrible controller
-DVD feature costs extra
-Small game library with limited appeal
-Many developers either haven't tapped the full power of X-Box's capabilities or their claims are unreachable due to other issues related to the hardware's architecture
-Microsoft

Pros of PS2:
+Gran Turismo 3
+Vast library with quality games across all genres
+Backwards compatibility to an even larger library of games
+Dual Shock 2 controller
+Design blends nicely with entertainment unit
+DVD built-in
+Optional Linux kit available for hobbyists
+It's a Sony
+I work for one of their first party developers :P

Cons of PS2:
-Network adapter and harddrive cost extra (and are not yet even available)
-DVD remote costs extra
-Two controller ports
-Limited texture RAM

And for video game history buffs, it's rare that the graphically superior system wins the console wars. 2600 outmatched the superior Intellivision and Colecovision. Though it didn't overtake the SNES, Genesis put a HUGE dent in Nintendo's market share. PlayStation trounced the N64. It's all about the availability of quality games!

Pick the system with the games that appeal to you. Both systems are powerful enough where the decision should be about games, not system.

Hardware-wise, the XBOX is clearly superior to the PS2 in most cases. It is also a much better DVD player. I have had both systems and it's clear the XBOX is technically superior. However, it doesn't matter.
Look at the game library, then decide what you want.

In either case, Sony will be releasing the PS3 in a year or two that should even up or surpass the XBOX specs.

I haven't heard that!?!?! I'd hope that we're at least three years from having to develop games for NEW hardware!

Haha! Hey Eric, is it that much a pain in the butt to learn Sony's hardware? I think they will learn from their mistake this time around and have a much more friendly interface for developers. I think you guys were one of the only companies to ever use that hardware to it's potential due to the complexity of the dev kits.

I'm not saying anything for sure, but I'd expect the hype and banter for Sony's next thing to pick up the end of this year. For sure by E3 next year we will hear something about their plans for the next system.

That's not what I'm saying. In my opinion, the biggest hurdle we faced from developing for the PS2 had to do more with data managment and finding a development platform that can reasonably handle all of the polygons that the PS2 can push around. The idea of even doubling the number of polys that we're currently pushing is far more scary...

I think they will learn from their mistake this time around and have a much more friendly interface for developers.

One could argue that X-box's PC-like development tools do nothing more than make lazy developers look above average.

As someone working on a new XBox title, let me first say that the PS2 sux0rs. :P

But I would pick a PS2 over the XBox anytime, because of the games.

GT3, FFX - that alone is enough. Add in fun games like Hot Shots Golf 3 and you've got a killer.

Xbox - Halo. Did I miss anything?

I like all the consoles and just buy them based on what games I want to play. I don't have an XBOX at home yet, but with games like Panzer Dragoon and Sega GT coming out, I'll definately be getting one.

About the other question, the PS2 isn't that hard to develop for. However, it is poorly designed in many respects, so it takes a lot of effort to make the games look good. The XBOX is real easy to develop for and has tons of memory

The Nintendo GC has very little memory and wimpy save game memory cartridge, so it's a real pain to develop for. It is fast though...

Three years is about right: rumor has it the PS3 is slated for 2005. Would you believe that there is already a web site for PS3 news and rumors? One of the links there takes you to a quote from a Sony exec back in 1999 saying that PS2 has 300 times the performance of PS and that PS3 will have 1000 times the performance of PS2! Yikes!
