Could someone try and snap a close up photo of inside an 02+ side vent? I want to see exactly what the mesh material inside looks like and how deep the plastic inlet is compared to pre 02.
I'm looking to do my own custom project and am wondering if it would be easier to start with a pair of the 02+ inlets or try and remove the fins and sand it smooth on a set of pre 02 inlets.

Thanks

Here a picture of a 2003 side vent.

The 2002 inlets are over $300 per side from the dealer; a bit expensive for a custom project.

They're not straight mesh across, they are set back, with an inner lip in the plastic, like the OEM 1991-2001 inlets... if you remove the mesh, it would be the same as removing the slats, and sanding the inlet flush.

Or, for about $30.00 try......

[edit] Mesh "Zanardi NSX Style" Side Air Intakes
[edit] by David Nguyen

The Zanardi style mesh side vents goes for $175 PER SIDE! If you've got some time and about $10 to spare, you can make your own mesh vents. All you need is a sheet of aluminum sash from your local Home Depot store (8' sections for $5) and a can of Rust-o-leum ($5).

Schematic

* Remove wheel
* Remove inner liner
* Remove the two "Special Mounting Nut" as shown. You'll have to reach waaay in there.
* Remove the Side Air Scoop
* You'll notice that the assembly is in two pieces. Remove the Vent Louvre
* Cut a piece of sash, bend around the vent opening to fit
* Once fitted, spray paint the sash, let dry and epoxy to the vent opening.

It sounds pretty easy, and it is. The only tough part is getting the Side Air Scoop off the car.

Bonus: The opening will be larger now because the original Vent Louver is tapered. Now, with the larger opening, you will get more airflow into the engine compartment/air box.

I did this about 6 years ago and it still looks great. I will try to post some pics later....
