Phone upgrade

I have a 91 with the factory phone. It works, but is not too clear. Are the new NSX's coming with an analog or digital phone. If the later, can you upgrade the analog in my car?

Phones are no longer offered in the NSX, and there is no "upgrade" or replacement digital phone available.

I installed a Nokia car kit for a 6100 series phone in mine in an afternoon, recycling some of the factory parts and didn't have to cut anything. All the factory wiring is preserved should I want to restore everything to "stock".

I may write an article for the FAQ if enough people prod me to. Hopefully people who are interested in how to best do this (and learn from my work) will respond here.

I don't want to write a huge thing on this unless it is preserved in the FAQ... how do we get stuff added to it?

I for one would appreciate this added to the FAQ section. I guess you can then remove the 6100 for portable use. That would be worth the effort as I now pay for a second phone, and of course it must be analog. I know I don't have to use the NSX phone, but as I know it is there, the controls are in the dash and I don't know if I can remove them without marring the console, the thing has to work along with every other little thing in my car. Are all of you like this? I suspect so.

Perhaps you could email me personally concerning the phone install and/or we could arrange a phone call to discuss the installation. I have looked just a bit at the kits and am most interested in how much integration you achieved with the factory phone system. I would suppose with proper wire identification you could use the original microphone and the power connects and such. But what about the center speaker and can you get the muting of the radio to work?

Bill, my email is [email protected]

I would also have an interst in the Nokia 6100 handsfree kit for my NSX. I have two other cars with the same setup.

erobbins, did you post a FAQ?

I'm going to to an extensive FAQ on this, and hope it will be included in the NSXFAQ on this site.

Unfortunately, I'm on business in Europe this week, and can't find the time to start authoring the text. One thing I regret is not taking photographs during the conversion process. I will likely take photos of the "old" components once they are removed, since anyone who is going to do this already knows what they look like installed. I'll also have photos of each component installed in the car.

Short answers for those who want to know:

1. The microphone and keypad thing on the console is simply an insert in the coin tray. A few holes are cut in the coin tray to accomodate it (I believe the phone is a dealer installed option), so you have to deal with these accordingly. I mounted the handset cradle here.

2. The factory microphone is not reused. I mounted the Nokia microphone on the dash near the TCS switch.

3. The factory center speaker is reused and sounds fantastic.

4. The radio mute function is preserved.

5. The factory antenna wiring CAN be reused, but it is difficult to get through the firewall. Also, the antenna must be replaced, as an antenna for digital service frequencies is different than for analog service. In my case, with AT&T Wireless, I used a flat-glass mount TDMA 800/1900 & AMPS antenna mounted on the rear glass in the inside of the vehicle (no external antenna visible).

6. The Nokia "handset" (not to be confused with the phone/cradle itself) is mounted in the center console where the old Motorola/NSX handset was located.

My initial intent was to reuse as much wiring in the NSX as possible, although soon into the project I realized that this was not necessary. You'll all see why when I do the photos and FAQ.

Hey I'm definitely interested in a write up. I had the dealer remove the old phone but he left all the wiring in place.

BTW where were you in Europe? I was there this last week as well. I was in Camberley, Surrey just outside of London and then Paris. There's an incredible Ferrari dealer in Camberley. He must of had 20 used Ferrari's for sell. Based on my calculation it was cheaper than buying them in the states.

I also saw a F40 outside of Paris. We were stuck in the damn traffic because of the taxi drivers. Sitting next to me was this guy and a little kid in a F40. Once we got out the city and the traffic cleared, he gave me a look and stomped on it. Increadible as it accelarated from about 50. As it speed off it looked a lot like an NSX.

It just made me want to get back home so I could do the same.

EDR - Have you come up for air yet in order to have enough time to write anything up on installing the Nokia? I basically have my car at the point where the factory phone has been pulled with the wiring in place. Just checking in.

Thanks!

I'm back to the real world, but my digital camera is still halfway around the world. I'm likely going to do this today on regular film, go to a 1 hour development place and then scan the images.

I suppose what you're looking for are power, radio mute, and speaker connections.

Well... the speaker connection should be obvious, and you'll have to run your own power from the fusebox. The radio mute is what you need me to help you with I suppose.

Wait until later today to see if I get the FAQ entry done.
