I believe I might have caught the worlds dumbest shoplifter in my store this week. Here's what happened:(sorry, a little long)

9:15am customer comes in wanting to purchase new front speakers and have them installed. Salesman shows him a set that he likes and the customer purchases them. We pull the car into the bay and start the install.

While his car is being worked on the salesman shows him an amplifier that would go well with the speakers. Customers looks at various things in the store and then sits down in the waiting area. 10 minutes later the guy comes out of the waiting area and pics up the box with the amp in it and carries it and the 8ga amp kit into the waiting room to "look at it". A few minutes later, he brings the amp box back out and puts it in the stack of others. He then walks outside with his backpack for a few minutes and comes back in with the story" My friend just stopped by and sold me this amp he isnt using and he had an amp kit too".
At this point its obvious what has happened, but we go along with it and take the amp/kit and charge him for the installation. He pays.

I then proceed to the box that he had in the waiting area(its empty of course) and confront him with the fact that the box has matching serial #'s with the amp and the serial # is in our cpu and the amp has never been purchased. With a stone look on his face he exclaims" You mean my buddy sold me a stolen amp! Lemme use your phone, I'm gonna call him and have him come down here so you can arrest him." He picks up the phone and has a fake conversation with a dial tone, hangs up and says" he's on his way down now". At this time I inform him that there are 14 cameras in my store and I have watched exactly how he took the amp in his backpack and threw the wrapping and paperwork in the trash. He admits that he stole it and I inform him that he now has two choices, Buy the amp at full retail with the 8gakit and pay for it to be installed again or I call the police. He pays, $539 more.

I assume that all has returned to normal and I go back to my work in my office. About 20 minutes later the salesman comes to me and says, you're never going to believe this, but I think the guy is trying to steal a pair of speakers now. I look at the monitor and sure enough he is opening his backpack with his feet and trying to slide a pair of 6.5" speakers in. I let him do it then call the police. While we are waiting on the police to show I ask him to sign a admission of theft from the earlier incident, he does telling me that he doesnt know what he was thinking earlier and that he's never done anything like that before. Shortly there after the police show up and make him remove the speakers from the bag. I give the statement, print the pics from the camera and off he goes to jail. We finished his car and parked it out front with the keys in it, per his request. The speakers he was trying to steal were $49, he had $265 in his backpack??

WHAT ARE PEOPLE LIKE THIS THINKING?? I told him I have cameras and I have 3 people on the sales floor and he had more than enough money to buy the stuff. WHAT A DUMBASS!!

The best part was when he tried to use his 10% off coupon!

I guess it's all aboot the thrill... Kinda like Wynona..has the bucks but unwilling to separate with it...sad sad times...lol

Mike

Did he get 10% off the $539 additional he had to pay?
Bahahaha...AHAHAHAHAHAH!

Great story...bahahaha, let's see the pics!

No, he really would have gotten away with the amp if he hadn't have come back in with it and asked for it to be installed too. Thats when we realized what was going on.

Scratch?? What you talkin bout Willis??

LOL, great story.

Thats unbelievable.

Suppose you don't get much jailtime for doing that.

That guy must be thick as can be.

Darwin Award Candidate!!

Great story.

Nope. He's not dead.

Ontopic: In my opinion it was pretty dumb to first want him to get away with his try to steal something. So he walks out and thinks to himself "whew they cought me but no big deal, i had to pay, next time it'll work". And he wanders off to your friends store who hasnt 18 cameras and 3 people on the same floor....

We catch shoplifters quite alot in my store and DutchBlackNSX is right, you dont get any jail time for this type of offense, as a matter of fact, this guy was bonded out($75) and picked up his car about 30 minutes after I signed the charges. It takes a good hour out of my time to go to the station to make the report. For what, most of the people we catch stealing are taking something worth less than $100. Its a slap on the wrist offense at best. I think its better to make them pay for what they were stealing. They lose the money either way, but my way I get the money, not the city and in many cases the theives have become loyal customers. They know not to steal from me, but they also know that I am a pretty understanding business owner. Maybe I make the guy pay and let him go and he tells his friends how cool I was for not having him arrested, now they shop in my stores too. You win some, you lose some. We cant catch them all, but if we convert the theif to a customer instead of a convict, thats one more customer singing praise.

How old is this person? Guess he hasn't 'grown up' enough to learn the difference between right and wrong. Or doesn't think he will get caught.

He was a 29 year old white male. He was driving a 00 chrysler sebring and was dressed fairly well for casual attire. He was not scruffy or poor looking at all. I am guessing clepto.

He should've known better then. Shame on him and good for you for doing what you did.
BTW, your link in your sig doesn't work. I might be getting in touch with you about possibly getting a HU installed in a center console for me. If you are interested in doing it.

I don't know where you guys are, but in CA we have something called petty theft with a prior, and it elevates the petty thatft to a felony and people go to state prison for that stuff. So, you are 18 and steal a 6 pack of beer at you local Stop and Rob, get caught and becasue you are a cherry, you plead guilty and they just place you on probation. Then you turn 20 and you take another 6 pack from somewhere, get caught and this time they charge you with a felony because of the prior petty theft.

THen with the three strikes laws, people actually get sentenced to 25 years to life for stealing a CD or something....

I say when these guy come into your store and steal, call the cops and insist they be prosecuted. Try to have a computer based surveillance camera set-up that captures color quality images that you can then download to disc and give to the police when they arrive. Good image quality is what makes the case. Well worth the dollars it may cost you.

And SNSSOUL, excellent work on your part with the letter apology re the first theft. That guy will end up pleading to whatever they offer him in all liklihood. Good job.

I would post pictures of him comitting the crime in a prominent place in your store (with his face obscured) as a warning to other like-minded criminals. Pehaps even a (redacted) copy of the police report along with it!

Funny, we just caught a thief this past weekend as well. At our workplace, for the past few months people have noticed change and other small items missing from their desks and long suspected the cleaning staff. Well, one day my director puts up a webcam and sure enough the cleaning lady comes in, throws a towel over the camera and then 15 seconds later she takes it off. The next day, he notices money is missing.

So we then set up a webcam in another cubicle, but under a shelf so it's not as noticeable. Next day the same lady comes in, and she's caught on camera taking money out of the drawer. Unfortunately, her back is to the camera so although you can see the motions and her putting stuff into her apron, you can't tell WHAT it is. Good enough to fire her, but not to prosecute. So then we take a 2nd webcam, remove it from its case and put it into a box sitting on top of the cubicle. We cut a small hole at the bottom of the box so that it's overlooking the drawer and wire it to a 2nd computer in the next cubicle. Sure enough, next day she comes again and steals money AGAIN. Unfortunately our overhead camera fails to go off, and again her back is to the other camera. Third day, we set it up again and this time she's caught clearly on both cameras taking the money. We send this to security and they notified us that she's been fired and they're looking into taking further action.

What amazes me is how stupid she was. Each day my buddy would put 5-6 dollars in change, and she would take ALL of it. If you're going to steal, at least don't steal from the same person multiple days in a row, or only take a small amount or something. Did she think the person was a moron and they would not notice multiple dollars missing every day? Duh. I figure she must have cleared $200-300 a night in our building...

What really strikes me as stupid is that she KNEW a camera was watching her enough to throw a towel over it, and STILL STOLE ANYWAY!! I mean, you work at a technology firm....so you would think she would have enough common sense to deduct that there might be other cameras around. I guess that is why she is a janitor and not something more (no offense to other janitors, but you get my point).

Years ago things started disappearing at a company I worked for. People were determined to catch the thief in the act. So they put a camera in the ceiling (this was before the web cam days... they went to quite an effort) and a new hard drive on the desk down below. The trap was set.

The next day the hard drive was gone and the video was collected for viewing. Sure enough the video caught a picture of the thief, well his hand anyway. On the video you only saw a hand shoot into the frame for a split second, grab the hard drive, then disappear. It was pretty funny.
