My 91 has started the dreaded center console film peel and I now have a lovely shiny spot with more to come I'm sure
Is there a remedy for this?

I offer this service and can completely strip and refinish in any color desired.

Is the plastic under the covering smooth enough to paint or will it need sanding, priming etc?

Ahh, enough for tonight. The shadow areas are hard to peel cause the plating is thin. Darn, can't load my attachments for some season.

The plastic itself has a smooth surface, but if you really want the paint to stick its typically a good idea to sand to increase surface area, prime, sand then paint.
Then again I dont know what coatings you will be using so maybe you have something that does not need these prep steps.

I would defiantly sand and prep the part to insure the surface is consistent and no contaminates are on the part. This will effect your final finish quality.

I have a couple of chips around the coin tray on my console. Since I am removing the console to have my CCU refurbished I think it would be prudent to look into taking care of this.

start peeling! :)

What kind of implement did you use in this "peeling" process?

Would it be faster (and mabye more fun) to use a some sort of paint remover?

Appreciate the input,

Matt

You can but it wont remove the Foil under the paint. You will still have to peel / sand & paint.

I did mine a number of years ago. It's not fun. Some of it comes off in larger pieces .. but some is quite stubborn. The foil wraps around the sides and I had some luck using an exacto knife to start it peeling from there and then work around to the face. Go slow with even pressure. It's kind of like peeling price labels off things .. sometimes it goes well .. sometimes it doesn't. And as was mentioned, soaking doesn't help. I think one member sanded the foil off but I think that would be quite risky.. although you might be able to just sand the areas that were lifting. But then you run the risk of other areas lifting and having to have it sprayed again. Personally, I think it's better to just do it and get it done. I had mine painted by a local franchisee of a company that does interior touchups for auto body shops. Can't remember the name at the moment...sorry.

In my experience, the foil came off best using two implements: the scalpel-shaped exacto knife, and a forceps.
I got into the hollows with thumb-shaped violin scrapers, but what normal person has those.
