Ok I got the rear passenger axle out (not intermediate shaft)of the car tonight... Couple questions I've researched on PRIME and want to verify before I fix or replace. (The band was loose)

1. If the CV Joint is popping can it be repacked with grease and problem solved or does it need to be rebuilt/replaced.

2. Can you visually tell if the spider pieces are bad just by cleaning them and inspecting... If so what do you look for to tell if they need to be replaced?

3. If I only need to repack the grease is this the correct boot kit for all boots on the axles? 42017-SL0-000 (my boot appears to be good but want to fix it right)

4. I see everyone is taking about NOT using the 2 small packets of grease and ONLY use the yellow grease.... Does this come with the OEM boot kit or do I have to buy it seperatly? If so where do I get it?

5. I know driving ambition sells a rebuild kit, does a popping noise constitute to rebuild the joint or only if they show any problems asked in #2..

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to check, order before putting this back in.

Thanks

Just stripped the same axle about two days ago I will try to answer your questions:-

You really need to remove the old boots then clean the axle and all the rollers and the spiders before you can ascertain whether there is a more serious problem that won’t be solved by renewing
just the grease.

It is unlikely there will be any problem with the spiders however check that the rollers are a good sliding fit on the three spider bearing carriers. Check the rollers when cleaned rotate without any roughness, and without much play - the spherical inner should move freely in the outer roller shell.
Hopefully you won’t find they are rough or any bits of roller floating around otherwise you’ll need a new joint, evidently you can’t buy the rollers separately.
Pays to mark each roller to ensure they go back on the same spider arms as they came off.
You have to remove the clips (new ones supplied in the kit) to take the spiders off the axles to get the new boots on, so make sure that you mark the axle and spider first so that the spiders go back in exactly the same position on the splines. The spiders will have been off set to each other by 60deg.
It is a bit of a mission getting the rollers back in the CV outers, make sure the taper edges of the rectanglar roller backs align along the axle when re assembling.
Only use the yellow grease which comes in the kit which is the same kit for all the joints and definitely use a banding tool making sure the boot inner spigots are located properly in their CV outer and axle grooves before you fully tighten the bands.

Good Luck hope you don't find anything a clean and re grease won't fix.

Mine was popping, repack did nothing to aid, replaced the cup ( 375.00) dealer problem fixed. Original part that was popping had recessed wear on the bearing guides. If you have similar, i wouldnt bother trying a repack.

Took the axle out, pulled it apart. Cleaned out all the old grease, pulled and cleaned the needle bearings, reassembled and repacked... Fixed my problem... Both sides new boots and repack..

I'm always one for doing it yourself, and this one I'm no longer scared of doing it..

Thanks for the info from the guys at driving ambition also...

If it starts up again, I'll just rebuild the ends.
