I have a paint chip on my black roof and under it is red paint. Did the factory paint the entire car red and then paint the roof black or has my car been repainted? I knew the nose was repainted due to rock chips but I thought that was all. I can see no evidence of any repainting on the roof and I do pretty much know what to look for.

Um I dont think the factory's gonna do that.
BTW FYI, I got a rock chip on my black top too. under it is bare alumi..

I got a rock chip on my '91 silver and it was primer white below the black paint on the roof before I filled it in.

In the NSX Development & History book, the 27 step painting process is shown in detail. Each step shows a picture of the car and what has been applied to it and when the car is baked. They use red in the example. The roof is unpainted until the last step in the painting process.

Based on the procedure outlined in this book, I'm led to believe that your roof may have been painted red at one time and then back to black. Is the black paint appear to be original? You may want to compare it with another NSX that has a roof with original paint.

There is a red-colored anti-chipping primer applied to some areas of the car. I don't know if the roof is one, but you may be looking at this. Does it look like the bright red used on the exterior, or is it a darker red. I believe the primer is darker. The book mentioned by Vytas may show this, or I may have seen it in the Body Repair Manual.

yes I believe the front part does have the anti chip primer. but my chip is on the latter half of the rood. After reading the posts I'm now not sure its white or alumi, but I'm sure its not body matched color

its on the 91 service manual under "exterior body" I believe

Thanks everyone, the chip does look like the red body color underneath. I guess it must have been repainted at some point. It would have been nice to have some paper work on it in the files I got from the previous owner/owners. I personally always keep all receipts no mater how small.

The roof is red under the black top.

According to the NSX History and Development-book (the one with the black cover and the letters 'NSX' in silver on the front) there is an anti-chip primer on the front part of the hood and also on the front part of the roof. It doesn't state exactly how far this primer goes however.

Thanks Lud. That makes me feel better. I was starting to worry what else might have not been reported on my car.
