Has anyone removed the drivers side external door handle? I'm looking into having the black roof painted and the driver's door handle is scratched up. The body shop thinks you have to pull apart the door from the inside to be able to remove it and paint it properly.

I can tell you that you have to pull apart the inside door panel from the door to access some mounting bolts and latch rod for the door handle. Not sure if it is necessary to remove it in order to paint it properly. Check out page 20-8 in the 91 service manual for more details. If you don't have it, it is located in the FAQ section under 'reference'.
