Well I finally got that Exedy GT lightweight clutch shipped and my mech opened up the tranny for the clutch install. I was all set (and extremely giddy) to take the car for a spin (hell I even took the day off) and start the break-in process.

Unfortunately, my mech. asked me to come by the shop where he pointed out some oil leaking at (now forgive my lack of technical or mechanical references here) the "cam plugs" and around the "oil pan area" with a torn CV boot on the passenger rear shaft. There were one or two other areas of slow oil leak. At first I though it was a result of negligence on my part; but, my mech assured me that this is rather routine and will happend to most older NSXs eventually. I will have my car ready after he returns from a GT race he is part of at Daytona next week Monday. I will definitely post something about the Exedy clutch by that weeks end.

BTW, Chris will be carrying that clutch eventually. Its a lighter single disc Exedy clutch. He knows more than I.

Just out of curiousity, for those that have had to change the Cam plugs, CV boot, etc. Around what milage was your NSX when it was done? How much did you pay?

Anyways, I have had my NSX sitting in the garage for 3 months now...so whats another week? < Sigh > who'm I kiddin'. I miss her.:D

Well,

Thank you sooo much for the input guys. I guess no one here has ever had to replace the Cam plugs and CV boot. Such overwhelming support.

Thanx Dlongo,

I must not have entered the right text for a search. From what I read, it seems that some people felt that this repair was too costly to do and not worth the effort since it would likely leak again.

What ever happened with your leak (or weep as they call it)?

My Mech. recommended I make the necessary repairs out of concern that some of the oil might find its way into the clutch housing. Since the tranny has been removed, he has better access to the cam plugs (and whatever the hell else is leaking). He has already ordered the parts for the repair; though, now I am curious about this STR plug replacement that prevents any further leakage. If the stock ones are sure to leak again, whats the point?

BTW, I got an estimate of around $900 with parts and labor. Not entirely sure what all the parts were, but I was told the cam plugs alone will be around $400, which seems somewhat consistent with the other threads.

Once again, thanx for the reply.

Much love to the feller NSXer :D

Mine still weep oil. I'm not really concerned about it, there's not enough weeping through to even leave drips on the garage floor. I had a leaking spool valve gasket and I cleaned all the gunk off of that area doing that work, so that is the only reason I noticed the cam seals weeping.

It's hard to say whether it's worth replacing without seeing the extent of the leak. I have not heard of it being a performance issue, I think the most common reason people have for replacing those seals is to keep the garage floor clean.

Hope that helps

:)

The CV boot always goes out on the older NSX. Also, ask your mechanic to check all the seals (VTEC, head gasket...,) too.

I took my car to Nick here in San Diego, who used to work under Mark Basch. The guy knows his NSX's, anyway the dealer would've been twice the cost and I don't trust them anyway. I paid 1000 bucks labor, plus another 1000 bucks for parts for the complete 90K service (TB, water pump, spark plugs, valve adjust, all fluids replaced, etc.), plus he replaced cam seals, spool valve gaskets, VTEC o-rings, oil pan gasket, timing seals, AND replaced ALL 22 cooling system hoses! He charged me another 200 bucks to replace two CV boots. I'm not sure if you could get such a deal in your area but it's worth trying. Nick definitely hooked me up.

Frustratingly, I had my 90K service done when I bought my car at 60K miles. This was over 3 years ago. It seems like replacing the Cam plugs would have been something they should have done. My mech worked on my car (but at that time he worked for the dealer and now has his own shop). I will definitely inquire about those other replacement parts. I believe if they needed replacing he would have mentioned them. He is pretty thorough.

There was never any oil leaking on my garage floor. His main concern was oil leaking in/around the clutch housing. I looked under my car while it was on the lift and noticed the oil seeping down the sides on various areas. It was enough of a leak to be anything major; but, my mech advised it be changed nonetheless.

Thanx for the input guys.

Man I wish I lived in Cali :(

I think every Honda motor in history has leaky cam seals.

thats true, all vtec and non vtec dohc honda motors leak oil on the cam plugs.
