Only in NY ..race you to the EZ Pass

we did away with some toll roads in our city about 15yrs ago. they are considering bringing back just toll lanes now. It would be voluntary to drive in them too.

I am sure that a combination of things created this accident. I happen to go thru many toll plaza with dangerious conditions and im surprised this dosent happen more. I am sure that it does happen more but maybe not on this scale.

Imagine coming off a thruway at speed and then you get bottle necked into a toll plaza where you have to decided quickly which booth you are gonna shoot thru with only a few seconds to decide. Now imagine that there are not many cars and you are unaware of the few motorist that might be around you because its early and you have just gotten up and you are trying to sip your starbucks while reading the paper and driving into work. Well today is your lucky day because the guy next to you is doing the same thing and he sees the same wide open booth flashing EZ PASS - EZ PASS - EZ PASS in front of him.

Here's a question: How the hell did they get out of their cars??? I'll bet that was funny seeing these two morons climb out their windows!

I'd love to hear the story on this one!

They should institute transponders like they use on Hwy 407 in Toronto. You just get on/off the ramps at normal speeds, no need to slow down for anything. If you don't have a transponder, it automatically takes a picture of your plate. In either case, you get a bill at the end of the month with your itemized charges, which goes on your Visa or whatever.

EZ Pass is a pre paid Transponder and not having to slow down is probably why this happened. !

Hows the nsxpo video coming along by the way

That picture definitely cracks me up.

I'm a big fan of the new multi-lane EZ pass overpasses that they're opening up in some areas now. Y have seperate toll lanes when you can just have a sensor over the highway that will pick up RF tags in cars going full speed as they pass under?

sure, who would be considered the other guy???

Nah, just meant each would think the other should be patient and just let him in. I've driven in NYC once, and it was truly a learning experience.

On the other hand, I don't think anyone could cut in front of me in traffic again here in Texas (without physically shoving my car out of the way) - NYC teaches you quickly. :)

Having been there, and seen the minor scrapes when cars grind against each other for position, I can believe this was just a traffic accident (nothing especially odd happened here, just timing/location).

I dont know if they have this in effect in other areas but here if you are going thru at a extreme higher rate of speed then posted at the toll plaza they can fine and suspend your EZ Pass privilages. There are also rumors that they will start using this system to see if you are speeding on a toll road. Lets say you get from point A to point B in 15 minutes when it should of taken 30 at the posted MPH ..... BOOM ! ..... ticket in the mail.

There have been periodic rumors here as well for our system. However, I don't believe it for a minute. The tollway authorities have a vested interest in the success and increased participation in our electronic toll collections, and it's highly unlikely that they would tolerate such activity or the inevitable negative publicity that would follow.

Exceeding speed limits going through the toll plazas themselves are a different story, which they DO issue official warnings about.

The entire Illinois Tollway system is currently undergoing construction to provide "open road tolling". By next year it will be available on all main road toll plazas. This is the feature that others mention above, in which the main road (all 2-5 lanes in each direction) is unobstructed, and traffic which does not have electronic transponders must shunt to the side to go through toll collection lanes.

Anyone visiting the Chicago area from the East Coast should be aware that your EZ-PASS will operate in all toll plazas in the Chicago Tollway system, including the Chicago Skyway (just as our I-PASS operates throughout the East Coast system, as I recently used when driving on the West Virginia Turnpike).

What does the "no HC" signs mean? I saw these this weekend while driving back from Chicago, a sign with HC and a red circle with a line through the HC.

There sure are a lot of tolls in the Chicago area.
