Hi all, I'm preparing to buy a 2nd hand NSX, but I know for a fact (talked to previous owner) that one of the 6 pistons in the engine are not "working properly". The previous owner found this out when he traded in his car to dealer who did an inspection. Question is, cause the car is in relatively good condition, is it worth it to buy it, and spend some money trying to fix the engine? How much am I looking at here? Is a complete rebuilt necessary?

Piston not working properly?

Hmmm...well there's not much a piston has to do.

You need more info.

Could be that the entire engine is trash (i.e. broken piston and damaged block) or low compression in one cylinder. In which case you might get away with honing and new rings.

In any case, it sounds like a fairly extensive problem that could range anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 to correct, and one should factor in the appropriate amount of money to correct the situation.

Obviously, you need to specifically find out what the exact problem is.

If this is a dealer which has a service department, ask them.

However, I must say, I wonder why a dealer wouldn't get this fixed before selling the car. The answer probably is, because it would cost them more to fix than fixing would add to the value of the car. Which should tell you something right there.
