Oil Filter Change

Anyone know how much oil is lost if the filter is replaced without draining the oil pan? I ran out of filters when I changed the oil this weekend and found out after it was too late. I have an engine full of fresh Mobil One and a used filter that needs to go. Do I need to re-drain the oil out of the engine to pull this off?

Thanks.

Depends on the filter, but about 1/4 to 1/2 quart in the filter. You will have some leakage when you remove the filter (do it with the engine cold or let the engine sit for about an hour before taking the filter off) but just be ready with paper towels and you'll be OK. No need to drain the good oil and if you've refilled with the right amount don't add extra to compensate for the filter. Happy Motoring!

Thanks for the response. I last purchased filters about three years ago and was using the full-sized version (-004). When I stopped by Acura yesterday I was greeted with the 'tea-cup' filter (-505). I read the related threads on the board last night and have decided to go with it for now short of searching out the OEM filters mentioned in the many comments. I trust no engines have blown up over the past couple of years using the shortened Acura-branded filter.

How many miles did you wait to change the oil this time? Did you go the full 8000 miles recommended by Honda? Most owners don't wait that long.... but I'm sorta with BrianK on this one.

I usually swap the oil and filter out at 2500 - 3000. This time it went about 3500 miles between changes. I may just follow that advice, just to leave it alone for now.

I'm old enough to remember years ago when it was a matter of course that you only replaced the filter every other oil change. That was SOP back then. Times have changed.

Regarding the original reason for the post. I felt pretty absent-minded and foolish on Sunday with the car up on the ramps and the oil already drained. I went to grab a filter from my stash and realized the last one was used in the previous oil change. I did, however, have a crush washer on the shelf. Lucky me

I have to wonder if anyone else has ever pulled a stupid stunt like that. Always gather your parts and tools together before starting a project is sound advice. Must be why I've been in sales for 25 years instead of a career in engineering.

I've drained my oil and realized I didn't have the tools to remove the oil filter before. I think it's happened a couple times now and on a different car each time. So I end up punching a hole in the filter with a long screwdriver and turning it off that way. So it's not that big of a deal.

I have however on at least one occasion had to ride my bicycle down to kragen to pick up a part or two during a job lol.

Yeah, you'll be fine. You barely have any wear in that oil or filter to begin with. Run the filter till you decide to do your next complete oil change. Heck, new porsches recommend an oil change every 20,000 miles on mobil 1.
