oil change

Welcome to Prime.

You will find this to be a great place with a lot of resources and help.

Here are some tips:

1) Check out the FAQ's before you post:
http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/faq.htm There is a search window at the bottom right you can use and a whole DIY section including a step by step on oil changing. Just type something into the text box and hit return.

2) Use the search for this forum to find years of good discussion information.

I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction. Also - many of us are part of the NSXCA where you get discounts, a quarterly magazine, and events. Check it out at http://www.nsxca.org

Welcome aboard!

Welcome. As matteni says, the FAQ section is a wonderful resource. As your time on NSX Prime increases you will also find links to others who have compiled their own DIY webs. Danoland is one such example.

As to your specific question, here is what you are looking for.

Regarding matenni's #1, the search box on the FAQ page does not work, at least not for me.

You can also find the answer to your question in your owner's manual as well as in your service manual. If you plan on working on your own car - and it sounds like you do - then having a service manual at your fingertips is a must. You can buy one here.

I have a very dumb question to add:

I just did the oil change (91) I filled up the oil filter before I installed it on the engine. Then after I put 5.15 quarts of oil, I started up the car and drive slow to normal temp... as soon as get home, I found I had too much oil !!! (maybe about 4 to 5 cm over the top mark on the dip stick.)

so should I not fill up the oil filter??

Am I going to be ok with that little extra oil in it?? or I should drain those out and bring back under the Full mark?

Please let me know.

I usually don't fill the oil filter... just a thing I guess... but too much oil is bad. I'd suggest bringing it down to the mark.

No dumb questions here, especially when talking about engine oil! 5-6 cm (2 inches) is A LOT of extra oil and I guess that it is WAY more than ½ quart that the oil filter takes up…or it was (hopefully) an errant dipstick reading. Before you do anything, try taking your dipstick measurement after you car’s engine has been for an hour and make sure that the car is parked on level ground. Also, remember to pull the dipstick, wipe it off and then take the measurement—this is pretty basic so forgive me if I have insulted your DIY intelligence—just want to save you from the messy job of draining a quart of oil.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out,

DanO

I hope you meant 5-6 mm, not cm. To be on the safe side just drain the oil to the proper level for peace of mind.

good luck

:o yeah, you guys are right... I really mean for 4-6mm, not cm, I guessed I have to go back to Grade 7 Mathematics... oh well.

I just measure it again, it's 1/8 inch...

So, would you guys worring about it??

:o

NSXDreamer2,
Here's a quick answer based on my own experience w/ my 95 T. With oil/filter change (not filling the new filter) it takes exactly 5.0 qts of oil to hit the mark on the dipstick. As I have speculated before in other threads, with a total oil capacity of 5.3 US qts, I guess there is about 0.3 qt of oil left in the pan during a normal oil change.

Hope this helps...

No, I would not worry about it if it's 1/8 inch over the top mark on the dipstick. That's less than 1/4 of a quart over. I wouldn't worry about it unless it were overfilled by at least half a quart, which it isn't.

I concur.
