"Odd" Gauge Installed

I have been looking at a 91 that has a gauge mounted in the console coin tray that states transmission temp. There is a small rocker switch installed above this. It does not do anything and current owner says it never worked and wire goes nowhere (hangs below engine now). Any ideas why this may have been installed? not much history on vehcile prior to current owner.

Is it auto?

No. It is a 5-speed (in snap ring range). Unfortunate that hole is not sut into the coin tray.
