Hello everyone!

I'm presently in Tokyo on business, but will be flying into San Francisco in late March, for the sole purpose of aquiring an NSX. I don't have one pinned down yet. Following my arrival in San Fran, I intend to search the southern states, for a reasonable price on a '97 - '99 NSX-T. This will be the second car I've owned (my first vehicle was a '98, Mitsubishi 3000GT). I purchased that vehicle in the USA, and brought it back to my summer home in Canada. Importing it was a breeze- daytime running lights, and a few other minute variables which took but a day to secure. I'm certain many of you here aquired your NSX's in the U.S. as well (considering the surreal discrepency in what these sell for in Canada, vs. the U.S., I can't see anyone picking them up in Canada).

I would be most grateful if anyone here could provide me with comprehensive information regarding what it is that's incumbent upon me registering a '97 to '99 NSX in Canada, after having purchased it in the USA. I am counting on being able to find the right deal within a week of arriving in the US, and subsequently drive it home (southern Ontario) shortly thereafter.

Thank you for reading this,

Respectfully,
PJ

A few of us have brought cars up from the US, but far from a majority. Almost all of us have canadian cars (including myself).

There is certainly money to be saved, but the more appealing thing (to me) is the selection of cars in the US. Dont forget that the dollar only moved a year and a bit ago, so the difference that we have now did not exist even 2 years ago.

I would be cautious about finding the "right deal" within a week. Most people in the US on PRIME find themselves looking for the "right deal" for over a year. If you want to pay more than market, you will probably find a good car, but you'll save less.

I think all you need is the daytime running lights and the baby seat bracket. RED and Bram will know. It is not a big deal AFAIK.

Good luck! Theyre awesome cars. I bet that if you line up your ducks, you may be able to find an NSX forsale in San Fran or the Bay area that fits your needs even before you get there by posting in PRIMES NSX WANTED forum.

BioBanker,

Thank you for taking a moment to respond.

I guess, I should restate my intent. I will be flying into the USA on March 29th, and plan to return to my summer home in Canada only after I find an NSX. I don't mind a quick flight or two, to various points across the US to pick up an NSX. Essentially, I'm looking for the "right deal" among the deals that are out there today. I'm not bargain shopping. I'm aware of what these generally go for, and am prepared to pay market value. Being that I'm not that selective on color, and other minute variables, I do hope I won't have trouble landing one shortly. I'm more worried about dealing with customs, than I am about finding the right NSX.

Thank you again for your assistance, and I look forward to posting here soon, only this time, as an owner, rather than a prospective buyer. :)

Greetings from Tokyo,
PJ

PJ, I can give you all the details about importing the car into Canada.
It is very easy...from memory...here are the steps.

- You must have a title
- you need to get a letter from the seller for customs
- you need to fax this letter to customs a min 72 Hours prior to presenting the car at the border
- Recall clearance letter (we can get this off American Honda Web site)
- RIV fee $182.00
-Taxes, 6.1% Duty, 6% GST & 8 PST
- Safety & emission test.
- RIV Inspection for DRL Canadian Tire etc (No Cost) easy.

PM me if you need additional info.

Bram

I have brought several cars up from the US to Ontario, including 2 NSXs.

You can save a good deal of money if done properly.

As a rule of thumb, add 50% to the US selling price to give you the total cost it will end up costing you in Canadian by the time you a back in your driveway with all expenses and taxes paid. Ie if you pay $20K usd, budget it to be end up $30Kcdn in your driveway with plates.

Bram hit everything almost perfectly, but he missed the $100 A/C tax ;)

The NSX only needs Daytime runners, BS the RIV guy about the child seat anchor (I said it was at the bottom of the map pocket). The required stickers - skip it, nobody does them!

Too bad you're gonna miss our NSX meeting on March 30th!

I've got an extra anchor if you need it... It's still in the OEM package, just show that you have it. My RIV guy looked for the SRS light so make sure the car comes with the OEM wheel and bag. I'd lend you mine but I sold it long ago...

Just for clarification, if the title is not in your name, you need a letter from the seller and proof of purchase. If you are driving it, you will need temp insurance and plates.

If you are driving up with the existing plates, they will need to be registered under your name but that may mean paying DMV fees... unless you can pay someone to lend you dealer plates for the journey.
