512TR curb weight: ~3,650 lbs (0-62 mph ~4.8 sec; 1/4 mile ~12.8 sec)
550M curb weight: ~3,725 lbs (0-60 mph ~4.2-4.3 sec [varies]; 1/4 mile ~12.6-13.1 [varies widely])
Gallardo curb weight: ~3,150 lbs (0-60 mph ~4.1-4.3 sec [varies]; 1/4 mile 12.4 sec)
Comparing the 512M (which was faster than the 512TR) to the 550:
Compared to the 512M, the 550 had three inches more leg room and 1.5 inches more head room, plus a larger trunk and a small storage area behind the seats. Yet it accelerated more quickly -- 4.3 seconds 0-60 mph. It was faster -- a real top speed just shy of 200 mph. And it handled considerably better -- the 550 was more than three seconds quicker than the 512M around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track.
So I'm at a loss regarding the assertion that 1) the 512TR has comparable weight to the Gallardo and 2) the 512TR was measurably faster than the 550M. Looks to me like the 512TR on its best day is about equal to a 550M on its worst day.
I'm not sure how either the 512TR or the 550M could beat a Gallardo in any capacity assuming the same driver.
The E60/61 M5/M6 consistently test in the 4.1-4.3 sec range 0-60. It might be "terribly fat" but it seems to be consistently faster than the Gallardo and more or less equal to the 996TT which also consistently runs in the 3.9-4.2 sec range. It might have had electronic aids on in this instance but it is normally very, very quick off the line.
