Does anyone know the code for, or what paint is used on the red NSX-R valve covers etc.

Just mounted my NSX-R manifold cover plate and now im thinking of matching the valve covers. And of course i want the same red tone.

Thanx,

Thanks for the tip Vance!

Where can i buy that paint and which color do i buy to get Honda "R" red color??? i ask because the name seems like a generic product brand and type and no reference to the specific color we want...

Thanks,
Nuno

I have no ide where to get it. But my guess is that you're not even allowed to import this kind of stuff (Preassurised container. Safety issues) from abroad by yourself.
Surely you must have some local automotive accessoried dealer even in Portugal?

Im a nice guy so i checked the VTH homepage for you.
The paint is called VTH Wrinkle plus and comes in either black or red. The red one is probably the one you want.

Oh, and you have to bake the paint in high temperature for it to cure and wrinkle!

if properly package and shipped through major companys, i don't see where is the problem, although i understand what you're referring to

yeap... i do have, but i still haven't found anywhere a product that produced the results i want, which is a look as close to OEM Honda Red as i can if not exactly the same

Thanks a bunch... and yes, the red it's what i want... you would be a uber-nice guy if you could get some cans for me .. heaheheheah

What kind of temperature are we talking about (in Celsius scale)??

Thanks a bunch,
Nuno

PM Larrynsx. He powdwercoats VC's from time to time. He sold me mine and it's matches the red intake quite well. Powdercoating is much more durable than painting also.

I would do that...my problem is the down time and having the cylinder heads open that long while waiting for turn arround from US... so i prefer a job done localy, while i can use paint bought in US...

as soon as i can, i'll probably try to find a couple of used VCs in the US and have the seller send them to whoever will powdercoat them...

not a ultra urgent thing to do....lot's of stuff ahead of it to do

Thanks,
Nuno

I've used this stuff many times before to recondition honda valve covers. You do *NOT* need to bake it or expose it to high temperatures. Its recommended to apply the paint at room temperature, however if you want the paint to wrinkle "more", then add heat via a heat gun to create a more wrinkled finish.

It dries in about 10min to the touch, but I'd let it sit for a good 20min before handling.

You can buy the paint from Summit Racing $10.95/can

Enjoy!

FWIW Larry sometimes keeps a set on hand or at least he did when he sold me mine.

Do I need to strip off all of the old paint first? If so, what product should I use to seal the magnesium cover, and does this need to be a high temp product?

If you have flaking already in the existing finish, then you'll want to strip the original paint off, otherwise you'll see witness lines of the flaked off spots through the new paint. Aircraft paint stripper works perfectly. Apply in a well ventilated area and don't let the stipper get on your clothes, etc. Let it sit and hose it off. Its that easy.

If the existing finish is fine, just dull or what have you, clean it with some wax/grease remover and apply the new VHT paint directly on it. you'll want to carefully mask off the unpainted area's like the oil cap hole, where the bolt holes are and coil packs go, etc, but for the OEM lettering, go ahead and just paint over it, and take some fine sand paper after it dries and sand off the paint using a sanding block. It'll look like factory.

And no, it doesn't need to be high temp paint.

Enjoy!

Thanks a lot! Will be sure to post pics once I'm done.

Thanks very much for the info.

After i read your post i followed the link and tryed to buy 4 cans of it... and had 2 problems:

- "Checkout with paypal" asked my login, and as soon as i entered my login it returned saying "This recipient does not accept payments from non US customers"

- In the cart, the cans showed a little message beneath it's description, saying: The part is classified hazardous. If you purchase this part, your order can only be shipped by ground

Well.... so much for painting my VCs myself with paint from US.... i have 2 options:

- try to find a way locally to have the job done. If i find the right paint, i'll do it myself, if not then i've try some bodyshops.

- find a set in US and have painted then have them shipped to me.

Thanks,
Nuno

Ya, unfortunately the law is the law :( Check around at your local auto body or auto parts stores, you'd be surprised - they may have it in stock! Most places around here (my area) only carry the VHT BLACK wrinkle, red must be special ordered...

If you want, you can send me yours (or buy a set from the US and ship to me) and I'd be happy to paint them and send them back.
