Anyone know how to install the 02 NSX-R diffusor on an 02 rear valence? I see some holes but the valence doesn't have any holes thru it. How does it install? 2 sided tape?

I think the only answer is to either drill the holes, or use tape. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any guide marks for where to drill the holes. :frown:

No you do not need to use the 3M automotive tape to install the diffussor. I found it easier to install it w/ the Rear Valance off when i was updating the rear valance, but will take about 2 hours to remove the bumper which is not nessicary.

The NSX-R diffusor has 9 mounting holes at the top side
5 are only required for installation (from Detlef @ Procar).

(STEP 1 Aligning, Locating, and Centering the diffusor)
First you must hold the diffusor under the rear valence and find the right place with the same distance to the right and left side. Thats easy because it only fits perfect at 1 position. You will want to mark this location on the rear valance and diffussor w/ a grease pen (masking tape marked on w/ a marker if no grease pen is available).

(STEP 2 Locating the mounting holes)
The only mounting holes needed are the 5 in the center (marked w/ the O's figure 1) at the (top) side of the diffusor (mounts denoted w/ X's are not used.

(figure1)

X O O O X
X O O X

O = drilling places
X = holes not requested
(looking down at the diffusor)

To find the center location to drill. I put a piece of toilet paper or paper across the holes on the diffusor (do not stick paper into the hole only across the hole) then i taped it onto the diffussor w/ the scotch double-sided tape on top of the paper in a shape of an X. so the paper is between the diffusor and tape allowing only a portion at thhe end of the X to adhere to the diffusor to hold the paper in place. The paper will allow less tack on the diffusor side and help locate the center.

Next, take a pall-point pen and puncture all five mounting holes into the tape and paper giving you the center point of the holes.

(STEP 3 Transfering the center marks to the rear valance)
To transfer the center marks, hold and put the diffusor under the rear valence again (matching the original centered marks w/ the grease pen or masking tape w/ marker discussed in step 1) and while applying pressure on the valance side and diffussor the tape should stay on the rear valence leaving the tape and paper on the valance.

(STEP 4 drilling the rear valance)
With the taped stencil at the buttom side of your rear valence you have exactly the right 5 drilling points for the rear valence. (If you are doing this while on the vehical i suggest to put wood blocking or something behind the rear valance to protect your exhaust from being punctured from the drill.) When drilling the rear valance i used a small bit first to check for the correct alignment. I checked it by sticking a small piece of music wire or something similar in all the hole drilled and made sure they lined up before i drill the larger holes. Then later I came back w/ a larger bit that allowed the screwsto fit.

*Triggered the drill with small quick bursts will help to not overheat and warp the plastic and to not make a jagged oblonged shaped hole. Slow is Better.

(Step 5 Hardware and attachment)

Purchase 5 Black oxidized screws from Honda or Acura because these are the correct 6mm x 20 mm Honda screws needed and include the washers:

Here is the HONDA PART NUMBER FOR THE SCREWS that have the washers attached.

93404-06020-07

i purchased from acura but honda should have them too.

The screws will be installed through the top of the valance w/ the help of a combanation wrench. Too tight to fit a socket wrench. Not much torque will be needed.

Awesome write up! thanks, exactly what I needed. Did you have to align your hood when you installed the Spec 2 hood, Rasir? Which production number hood do you have?

I don't have a procar hood yet. I'm planning on a hood in the future but not right now. i have the Procar spec 2 NSX-R spoiler, Diffusor, and Rear Window Garnish w/ Mesh.

That was Procar's instruction. Did you get a Procar "R" diffuser?

It was a bitch to install. This is how I did it. Double sided tape to make sure it is on straight; I put some small nails into the holes (On the top side of the Diffuser) and pressed against the valence to make the marks for drilling. The location My hands were too big to fit behind the Valance, Erick had to do it for me. It was werid when I drilled into my car for the first time....

No, I got the OEM NSX-R diffusor. I bought it from Procar with no instructions or tape or bolts, so I am trying to figure out the best way to install it. Those seem to be some big bolts though. Thanks for your input, VanceHu. I think your way is the more pratical way for me. Do you remember what size drill bit you used?

I installed mine like this:
I used small pieces of masking tape carefully slightly tape it upside down to the difusser (where all the holes are) and lined up with the valence and press hard to the valence so that the masking tape sticks to the valence. Note (this will mark where the bolts and holes should be drilled. From there you drill a small hole on the valence and lined up again to make you have it closest possible. I think this method works best if you have a little manual dexterity with it. I installed mine in 1 hour. Including turning the nuts and bolts by 2 fingers. Good luck though.
I know it's a bitch to install...:)

my procar diffusor says honda on the topside where you do not see it since its mounted to the car. Its probally molded from hondas diffusor so locations should be the same.

well, we have an diffusor installation guide.
Rasir X asked for it and got it.

Sorry Ricky that I dont asked you for something like that.

Because our cf version is 100 % identical with the OEM diffusor, also the mounting holes are the same.

There are different ways for installation, but the most exact way is the way
we recommend.
We had a customer here who measured 1 mm difference, that was too much

If you are giving those out on request, I'd like to have a copy. I have the OEM diffuser.

I used 1/4 inch drill. It is little larger than needed, but it will give you some room for alignment if needed. By the way, if you have a black car, you can put some tapes under the valence before making the mark, it will help you see better.

Good luck. It is amazing how much more meaner the car will look with that on:smile:

Vance the VIRGIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome, thanks for the advice everyone. I think everyone should drill their car at least once in their lifetime. It might be awkward at first, but you will feel so much happier once it's in:biggrin:

Vance the VIRGIN!!!!!!!!!!!

He was just saving himself for the right car:tongue:

By the way for future reference does anyone know where they sell the tabs to make drill templates for occasions like this. It is like a small tube that goes into mounting holes and has adhesive tape to the back of it so when you stick the spoiler or other body parts one it leave the tube on the panel where you drill w/ exact center marks? I know Wings West has something like this on there spoilers.

Decided to use Urethane to glue this sucker on in place. Installer didn't feel his hands would be able to reach the bolts to tighten them enough. This Sunday...and I'll finally be done with mods.....NOT!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm about to get the Downforce version of this product. I don't want to put holes in the pristine underside of my rear valence unless it's absolutely necessary........is there any way to install the diffusor without drilling or using adhesives that ruin the paint, ie. will something like double-sided tape work and be strong enough?

Has anyone done this?

Thanks very much for the explanation.

Have one other question.

Does anyhone know, apart from looking good on the NSX, especially with the NSX-R wing, if the NSX-R diffusor actually has a real usefull purpose on the car.
Does it increase downforce at the rear (or overall downforce). Or does in help in any other way ??

It does? But the OEM NSX-R diffuser looks so, well, weenie compared to others.

In search for a clear answer I found this on the world.honda.com website on the 2002 NSX-R with regards to the aerodynamic changes.

Carbon Fiber NSX-R front hood with air duct: Clf: -0.025
Carbon Fiber NSX-R air duct: Clf: -0.010
Front under-cover with finds: Clf: -0.040
Reduced front condenser opening: Clf: -0.025
Carbon Fiber rear spoiler: Clf: -0.085
Rear diffuser: Clf: -0.002
Rear diffuser: Cd-value: -0.003

The total CD-value for the NSX-R is 0.32 with a Cl of 1.00. Don't know how this translates into lift or downforce though.

The CL or Coefficient Lift is the amount of lift generated by a car moving at a certain speed.
Clf stands for Lift Coefficient/front and Clr for Lift Coefficient/rear.

I think that the table listed on Honda's site is not entirely correct since the rear wing and diffuser should minimize lift at the rear and not at the front. So the listed Clf value should probably have been listed as Clr.

The total effect of these chances is listed as follows:
Compared to the original NSX-R, these changes translates into an increase in vertical force acting on the front tires of 36.2 kgf, and of 25.0 kgf on the rear tires (test results measured at 180 km/h in both cases).
