Hi,

This is my first post on nxsprime. I was hoping for some insight.

I am looking to purchase an NSX but I am not sure which year to consider.

I would have to stay pre 95 to keep the cost down.

Should I consider one year over another?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
David

I chose '94 for the following reasons.

1. New Style Wheels
2. Newer than 91-93 but cost difference is not so much.
3. No snap ring worry.
4. Lower mileage
5. Better reliability(?) - Haven't heard many '94 owners complaining about mechanical problem...yet.

But everything that I listed are all subjective. I think it depends more on how well conditioned the car is, mileage etc. I'm the type of person who would take medium mileage '94 NSX than lower mileage '92 for the same price. I feel that the years the car has been around has a little more significance than mileage.(unless it's 50k mile difference.) Happy Hunting!

I'll disagree with my friend ak here. I think that the number of miles and the overall condition are a lot more important than the year of the car. Maybe not so much when you're comparing a car that's one year old vs three years old, but they are when you're comparing a car that's eight years old vs ten or eleven years old.

Keep in mind that there are a whole lot more '91 cars out there than any other year, so it's easier to find a '91 that's well kept than a '93 or a '94. Also, some 80 percent of the '91 cars are not in the snap ring range and so are not susceptible to that problem. About the only other significant problem that frequently plagues the '91 that was fixed by '94 is the window regulators, and that is easily preventable by installing the $15 Dali Racing window fix-it thingies.

If you can find a nice '94 that meets your needs for a similar price to a '91, by all means go for it. But it's not that easy a task, with six times as many '91's on the road than '94's.

Thanks for the insights...

Do NSXs normally have a lumpy idle? I have been in a friend's car and the idle seemed rough and he told me it was how it was designed (sportier). Is this true?

If cost is the prime consideration, then you will certainly be looking at a 91. Correct me if im wrong (I know how this forum works!) but there are probably as many if not more 91's out there as all other years combined.

If, however you want the best of the early lighter coupes before the cars got heavier and got power steering, etc, then you will be looking for a '94.

As Ken said, condition is really the prime consideration with these cars. They are pushing 12 years old now. Many have been completely abused and neglected. Some have been lovingly cared for over the years. When shopping for one, it's easy to just look at autotrader or another online classified site and see the miles, price and year, but that only tells part of the story. You really have to inspect the car before you make your purchase. Look on the FAQ for a very detailed "pre-purchase inspection" form that you can download.

And no, the idle should be very smooth, like a fine timepiece.

Not quite, but close. There were roughly 3100 sold in '91, 8000 total all years (U.S. only sales figures).
