I have a stupid question  but right now I have a beautiful 1995 red/black leather NSX with 60k on it and all services done on it. It is all stock except for exhaust and intake. Nothing wrong with the car at all... in fact this is my 2nd one ( had a 91 before) but wanted the Targa. i am in the market for a 1995-1996 Ferrari F355 Spider. I found a beautiful one in Dallas with 14k all service done on the car and new leather @ $70k. Loooked at the car in person and it is really nice... Forrest green over tan leather. It is on the website : www.lamborghinidallas.com
So my question " is the Ferrari worth it" ??? I love my NSX but the Ferrari... well it is a Ferrari. But the NSX is a superb piece of engineering.
What our your thoughts?

well, you've had 2 nsx's... why not try the F355?
you can always sell it if you don't like it

Did they let you drive it. That woulda been a big factor in deciding. It is a Ferrari..if you don't mind some of teh stuff that goes along with that then try it see if you like owning it more than NSX.

Or just get/keep both if you can.

I say go for the Ferrari. You probably won't take a bad hit later if it isn't for you. I plan on trying out a Ferrari someday just for the experience.

Like soemone mentioned above, you've tried 2 NSXs and you can always come back.

It depends on how much you drive. If you drive very little, 500-1000 (maybe 2K) miles a year, then the F355 is fine.

Anything more than that and it is much cheaper to *drive* an F360/F430 at double the F355 purchase price.

Simply put: if you cannot afford (or refuse to pay) the premium for an F360 over an F355, then you cannot afford (or want to pay) to actually drive the F355. If the cost of entry is too high for the F360, stay away from the F355.

The [un]fortunate fact of life is that the NSX has no real competitors at any price.

How much do you want for your NSX? Are you the original owner?

If you want to change it up a little go for the 355. See if you can test drive it first. Of all the 355s the 95 seem to be the fastest and deliver thee nicest exhaust tones with a tubi and test pipes. From first hand experience and owning a 355 for the last 8 years (~30kmiles on the clock of which 28K i put on) i have yet to have any problems besides a window regulator which set me back $350. Other than that all service (oil, filters, etc) was done at the local mechanic shop for basic rates, of course using factory parts. We recently dropped the motor for its second t belt service which costed <$1000 for parts with upgrades. Labor was done by my brother and I unsure how much the dealer would indeed charge but i believe its within the $4-5k range for complete service. Its not the hardest to do but it is time comsuming. When all is said and done its a really nice car. Choice is really up to your opinion f the car after you drive it.

Hi Kenny
Personally, I think the F355 is one of the most beautifully looking Ferrari's ever made. Performance wise, from what I've read, it's very similar to the 97+ NSX.
If a F355 is what you like I think you should try it. Like said before, you can always sell it again. You will pay more but then again, you are not driving the NSX either because it's the most economical car there is.

I asked a similar question, but got different responses....

Hi Three48,
I've read your question before although I did not comment on it. Again speaking purely from my personal standpoint, I would never choose the 348 over the NSX. The few 348's I saw (all 2 of them) when I was looking around for a high end sportscar did not impress me. But, same as with Kenny, in the end you are buying the car for yourself, not for me, your neighbour or anybody else. So if the F348 is what you like and dream about, then that's what you should buy.

Simple. Just as with the 355 and the NSX, if you can buy it, you can sell it.
I'm sure there are many people out there who at one time bought a NSX and sold it after a while because 'it' didn't do it for them.
But if you are lucky enough to be able to try both, then why not.
There simply is no substitute for personal on-hands experience.

You know I have always wanted a 355 Spider....... until just now.
I just looked at that site. I found the car, it's a nice looking car.... but... I think it looks really dated compared to the NSX. Especially the front end of the car. It looks like a Fiero.

I say go for the F-car. I will own one 1 day also. I will admit, I'm starting with an NSX and will go from there.
Now if Drew's response above is indeed fact?, then keep in mind he is saying you will spend the same amount on either the 355 or the 360. In his opinion it would be smarter to purchase the 360. But I would like to remind you that, that means you can buy either one, which ever one you like the best. The only reason I'm putting it in that perpective is because personally I love the 355 and don't care much for the looks of the 360! I wouldn't be excited to spend that much in maintence over the 360 but I would deeply have to consider the 355. Whichever you choose please keep us informed as we are rooting for ya.

Your my hero...LoL

I say go for the 355 as well it's a step up from the NA1. Keep plenty of cash for repairs/maintenance and enjoy yourself. It truly is the best sounding Ferrari imho. Oh yeah buy a tubi for it and you'll toss the radio right out the window:biggrin:

If you do buy it, bluff them and tell them you won't buy it unless you can test drive that Carrera GT.

70 K is way too much

I would bite your ATM finger and keep your eyes open. You can find a 355 for as low as 55K with maintance. Just gota find the right seller at the right time.

Also, the valve train issue was addressed i believe from 97 and UP. So to get a 95-96... it could be costly if that problem has not been addressed already.

I was looking into buying one also and found a nice one locally for 55k. I was the second caller and missed out

Get a car from a dealership is a no no in my books. After all, they got all that over head and on an exotic, you know they got the car at a trade in of 50K and making at killing at 70K. Maybe they'll even bring it down 5K to make it seem like your winning only to walk away with 15K of your hard earned money.

Keep an eye out for distressed 355 owners as housing market is going from hot to shot. Im sure someone will sell their's to make payments on 1% ARM mortage:biggrin: <---- pretty sure i screwed up this word

Good luck. If you have an NSX right now, just putt putt around in it till you get the 355... there is no reason why you cant have both.

I share your enthusiasm for the car, but $70k doesn't seem like the right price. When I was looking at them last year, spyders were running more like $95-$110k. I had found a grey GTS and yellow GTS with 25k miles for around $78k and $90k respectively, both '99. I'm by no means an expert, but am I making a correct assessment here?

I would also be very cautious with an off color Fcar, which green definately is.

Not that it isnt beautiful, Im sure it is, but off color Ferraris are sale proof. Not a problem if you're keeping it forever, but if you want to "try it", problem.

I like it! it is a very nice looking car in and out, sure it's a bit dated but it looked good in 95 and it still looks good now, as for the 360?..I have to agree with GregZ the 360 looks like a Toyota in the front and a kit car in the back, but that's just my opinion...I had a 308 and I like the looks of a 308gts over the 360 anyday, If a car that looks "new" is important to you, than your gonna need to spend more money or get a Celica.

I always wonder why people ask these types of questions..I mean most the people I know that have the money to buy a 70k car that is not in anyway practical..they know exactly what they want and they just get it.

maybe I just think too much about this stuff:biggrin:

Guys thank you for all your comments. I had to get some opinions from fellow NSX owners like yourselves. 70k is alot of money and I worked hard for it and didn't want to make a wrong decision. I to was thinking of just putting on some Iforged wheels and suspension on the NSX to give it a face lift and save a lot of money. When I was at Lamborghini Dallas the salesman was really pushing me on the green Ferrari.... saying it is a collector's color and very rare. I really love the red/tan or black/tan combo. But then the green F355 started to grow on me a little. In a post above someone stated that the 355 looks dated and I agree but so does the nsx... especially when it is parked next to a Lamborghini LP640. Rims make the world of a difference on the car. I had a 91 black/ivory nsx with Flux 3 piece I forged rims and went to a ferrari dealership and walked around. And usually when you come out you look at your normal car ( not an nsx) and say it looks like a piece... but when I came out and saw my nsx I was like Wow that is my car. It looked awesome!! Anyway I will let you guys know what I decide on.

Do you really want a green F-car, or are you settling based on condition and price. Might be hard to unload a green F-car if you decide to sell.

The green vs. red/yellow/black/silver would be a good question for the F chat guys. They'd know how marketable the car is.

For a car like that, IMO, you would be MUCH better off deciding exactly what you want and then doing a national search. Maybe you could find a green-owner/seller that has been on the market for a while and is getting frustrated.

Whoever posted about the real estate decline bringing 355-level Ferraris on the market -- excellent observation. Awful lot of young newly minted hundredaires from Real Estate that would be Ferrari buyers and starting to sweat.
