NSX makes noise when rolling back?!?

I am thinking there might be something wierd with the tranny/diff/transaxle... I can be moving forward, and around turns and no issues. However, as soon as I start coasting back, wether car is in neutral or on the clutch, it makes a moaning/groaning/vibration/shutter type noise until the car stops or moves forward again.

Makes no sense to me, but I'm about to flush the fluid to see if it helps, any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance guys.

Did you recently install brake pads? Happen to be Cobalt GT Sport for the rear which were relatively new for the NSX? If so, I've been having similar issues. Will probably go away when you change pads which I'll do after this season. At first I thought it could have been suspension or tranny issues. Hopefully it's just your pads.

Actually I did just install pads about 1500 miles ago... I used Axxiss/PBR/Repco Ultimate Brake Pads and DaliRacing/RacingBrake.com Slotted Rotors...

Hmm... I'll see if its the combo of the pad moving backwards on the slots thats doing it.

Thanks!

Hmmmmmm, very interesting.

I noticed a similar thing this week for the first time! I wouldn't say shutter but more of a groaning noise not a gearing issue.

Does it do it every time you try to go back or occasionally? I was about to take it to Comptech for a check up or a transmission oil change (8K miles on the fluid) and tried to duplicate it today by backing out of the garage but it didn't do it with numerous attempts..

I too had installed new pads (Panther Plus) on the rears when I turned the rotors (DaliRacing floating two piece rotors) before a two day track event. Total since then about 800 miles.

I don't have it happen all the times, but it does happen every now and then.

Its sounding more and more like the brake pads which makes sense because you can almost feel the slightest vibration. If it was gear/tranny related I would almost expect to hear grinding or crunching...

I think we found the culprit.

Both your situations are extremely similar to mine - sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Very good good chance it's the brake pads after having a few tech gurus look at it and a local dealer from my experience. Mine started happening after an SCCA track day in June with HEAVY braking from 145 to 80 on Pocono's Long Course.

Now it is doing it more regularly when the car is rolling back.

So is the only solution replacing the pads again or did you come up with a better trick, perhaps greasing the pins?

Only when the car is rolling back. Haven't changed the pads yet, but I will try greasing the pins - did that solve your situation? Thanks.

Same in here, only when initially going/rolling back. This was the first day that I drove after the last post. So no, I haven't done the pins yet. Gicen the heat from the track - I was getting 600F in the paddock - I suspect it can dry the grease.

Well I must be hearing things now ...........

For tomorrow's club meeting at Hooters, I decided to put the lock nuts on given that one of our locals had two wheels stolen last week. As I was replacing one of the nuts on each wheel, I heard this subtle groaning after I start putting the lock nut and before torquing it  Almost like having gas in your stomach

The first time I thought it was weird and let it go. But it did it on all three wheels - all three were torqued by a friend at 90 ftlbs at the track, except the fourth which was mounted by the dealer after inspecting the pads at 80 ftlbs.

So I started wondering perhaps it's the torque and the spacers ......... then after I finished torquing all the nuts anew on all four wheels, I heard the noise again without touching the car

I know its not Halloween yet but something is fishy in here.

Have any of you done the greasing of the pin or changing the pad?

It's something to do with the brakes. When i back up there is a horrible whining noise and the right rear is also squeeking when going forward because the wear sensor is hitting the rotor.
