NSX Battery Question.

In December I purchased a new OEM battery from my local Acura dealer and replaced the original one from 97 due to starting issues. Since then I drove my car a few times without any problems starting. Two weeks ago I took out my centre colsole for painting and left the interior light on by mistake. So when I went to install the console back guess what, cars dead.

My question is if I put a battery charger on the battery will it hold a full charge or is there a chance since it has been two weeks that the battery may have frozen leaving it useless. I'm in Toronto and we've had varying temps from -25 to 1 deg celcius.

Should I buy a new battery or take a chance charging it and drive it (Just don't want to get stranded in the cold.

TIA for the help.

You have to take the battery out to charge it as it may be frozen. If the outside of the case is bulged at all it froze and should be replaced. I have used batteries that have frozen and bulged but they are unreliable. If you chage it use 2 amps for 24 hours and finish with a 6 amp charge to crack those sulfated chystals.
What exact battery is it and do you have a part number? I need a new battery.

Take it back to the dealer as defective.... they should just replace it under the pro-rated warranty.... don't tell them that you left an interior light on...(play dumb)

So, you're telling him to break the law by committing fraud. Nice.

I would suggest taking it back to the dealer, telling them what happened, and asking them what to do. They can test the battery to see if it can be recharged; if so, it should be fine. If they tell you to replace it, they might even do so under warranty (even if they know you left the interior light on).

No not FRAUD.... geez it was a suggestion. I agree with you on taking it to the dealer and see what they can do for him.

Thanks guys,

I'll check out the battery for bulging on the case tonight. I will probably still take it to the dealer for testing.

Thanks for the help.

Try trickle chaging at 1-2 Amps for like 8 hours... it should bring it back to a reliable level... I would suggest bringing it inside, allow it to reach room temp before you try to charge it. Make sure you have lots of ventalation as the battery will most likly gas as you slow charge it.

If all else fails... well... the dealer will probably pro rate the replacement... or just make you buy a new one under the user-stupidity claus... no pun intended as I've done the same thing you have on occasion... :-/

I found installing a Schumacher SE-112S battery charger which automatically charges your battery as the voltage starts to drop saves you from this problem. Mine works great. I was able to attach it to the to aluminum rods beside the spare tire and ABS/TCS unit. I was able to run a ext cord underside of the car so you can close the hood while you car gets its beauty rest in the winter cold months, so don't forget to unpulg it before moving the car... :-)

Here is a link to the charger info... If you live in Canada I was able to find the exact charger at Part Source... it sells new for about $40CND...http://nsxhelp.com/faq/Battery.htm

I have this unit as well, and it has worked just fine for the past twelve winters.

$36.99 from the Schumacher website
$29.99 from doityourself.com
$29.95 from Uncle Joe's
$29.66 from Rjay's website
$29.00 from Battery Sales USA

All prices in U.S. dollars. I haven't dealt with any of these folks; I bought mine from Bass Pro, which may have stopped carrying it since they don't show a price for this item.

Thanks for the info guys. One of my friends brought over a charger, we managed to bring it back to life. The car started up fine last night and I brought it to work with no problems today.

Thanks again for the help.

Johnny.
