A headline at automotive news reads,

"Honda Motor Co. Ltd. will shift production of its low-volume niche cars in Japan to a bigger plant to achieve higher efficiencies amid tough sales here."

This headline, if it in fact refers to the NSX implies the car will live on. Anyway to access the complete story you have to be a subscriber. Is anyone here able to get at it? If so please post the details. Here's the link:

Then just do a search on NSX.

i would say this is proof the NSX will live on... what other low-volume niche cars do they have?? New plant also might mean new car!!!

Great! Move production of the current models to Suzuka, so the Tochigi plant can focus on getting ready for the new NSX!

Or am I just dreaming that?

Maybe the new NSX is going to be sooooooooooo advanced they have to rebuild the Tochigi factory.

There I go, dreaming again..........

Honda to Move Low-Volume Auto Model Output to Suzuka Factory

July 1 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japan's second- largest automaker by sales, said it will transfer production in Japan of low-volume auto models to its Suzuka factory starting in mid-2004 to increase efficiency.

Tokyo-based Honda will shift output of NSX and S2000 sports cars and the Insight hybrid, to its Suzuka plant in Mie prefecture from the Takanezawa plant in Tochigi prefecture, the company said in a statement. The automaker will use factory space left at Suzuka after the January closure of a minicar production line.

The automaker, which makes almost 90 percent of its operating profit in the U.S., is reorganizing its operations at home as sales fall in Japan because of its aging model line-up.

Honda will also shift production of the models' engines, which are made by its wholly-owned Honda Engineering Co. subsidiary, to Suzuka from Tochigi, making the models' engines, transmissions and bodies in one location. Centralizing production will save costs, the automaker said, without giving a figure.

Combined production in Japan of the NSX, S2000 and Insight models in 2002 totaled 17,000 units, compared with 330,000 for Honda's best-selling Fit compact car alone.

The Tochigi plant will now focus on research and development working alongside Honda R&D Co., the automaker's research and development unit, which is also based in Tochigi.

Honda shares fell as much as 2 percent to 4,460 yen and were traded at 4,500 yen as of 1:20 p.m. in Tokyo.
