Notchy 2nd gear - Normal?

Is it common to feel some friction and notchiness when shifting from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd? It does not grind, but just not as smooth as other gears. All other gears go in with just a click sensation. I have a 92 with 60K miles.

I just changed the oil with oem Honda trans. fluid.

I am concern that the friction or notchiess would get worse and eventually damage the transmission.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It's pretty common for NSX's to feel a bit notchy when cold. Does your trans smooth out once the car is warmed up? If it doesn't then you might have a syncro going bad.

I always think it helps to row through the gears a couple of times before you start out in the morning.

Yes, it gets a bit better when hot. I am speaking in relative term for the notchiness. All other gears shift with a click regardless of temp. The 2nd is the only one that has some friction. I wonder if others' 2nd shifts with a click sensation like the rest of the gears or the 2nd is common to have some friction?

Thanks.

From what I've read, the 2nd gear synchro has a slightly different design because it takes the most abuse. That design does tend to make it slightly more notchy than the rest. Once the trans is sufficiently warmed up, all the gears should shift with a positive 'snick-snick'.:)

If I try and shift my '94 NSX quickly it will grind going into 2nd gear.....and , yes, the clutch is in all the way.

There have been posts on this subject before, but... Some people have had luck with fresh/different tranny fluid. Try GM Synchromesh. If that doesn't fix it try a mix of Friction Modified GM Synchromesh and normal Synchromesh.

2nd gear has a dual cone syncro and they do feel different cold. if it is grinding you have a problem and trying different fluids my help short term but may harm the plate material in the diff. have you tried having the shift cables adjusted?

you can adjust the shift cables? Is it normal maintenance? I remember seeing two metal rods control by the shifter.

yes the cables are adjustable. check the service manual for the procedure. if you have alot of miles on you nsx you may need to consider replaceing the cables. there is same kind of issues with the rsx. it shows up more in cold weather.

I bought a 02, only a year and a couple of months old and the first thing I did was grind shifting into second !
I does it more when it is cold and when the RPM's are up high, but not as much when warm. I can feel it not wanting to go into second so I just shift into third at those times. I will try the GM fluid sometime. Hope it worksl.

wow... it occurs on an 02? It must be normal for the 2nd to be a bit notchy.
