NorthWest NSX Specific Track Events in 2005?

Folks, after a year of resting form NSXPO 2003 - where we partnered with Northern California Racing Club for our track events, some of us track junkies are dumb enough to contemplate resuming the organization of putting NSX specific high performance driving school/events, again!

As you know, since 2003, several organizations have sprouted offering track events. But none match the enthusiasm and especially the social camaraderie of smack talk that we had when we organized NSX track events. And we should note that these events would not have happened without our many sponsors and especially Niello Acura's generous sponsorship. Our last club event at the track was organized/partnered with NCRC at Fernley back in April which drew about 18 NSXs if I am not mistaken. At other track events, the most number of NSXs that we are seeing are about 6 to 8 - mostly the same regulars.

So, before we jump into this risky proposition again, we would like to gauge your interest in participating at primarily NSX exclusive high performance driving school/events. Such events in the past drew consistently about 40 NSXs at Thunderhill. All our events include mandatory in-car instructors for novice and low intermediate run level drivers, with strict safety rules regarding expected conduct at the track. This does not mean that weekend warriors and boy racers will not have fun too; we don't want to spill the beans yet ;)

Please let us know your interest by sharing your responses to the following questions; if you have questions of your own you want to add, by all means please do so:

(a) Would you attend a track event if it falls on a week day (Monday -Thursday)?
(b) Would you attend a track event if it falls on a Friday?
(c) Would you attend a track event if it falls on a weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday; might be able to do a 2 day event)?
(d) Prices have gone up since we put these events. To break even we would need about 60 cars, with a one day registration fee of about $250 at Thunderhill and about $300 at Infineon. Laguna Seca might be slightly higher. Are these registration fees a concern?

Competition for track days has increased and we have to act more opportunistically to secure days - which means grabbing dates on short notices and most likely partnering with other car clubs or organizations to reach break even budgets. We would like to target dates in April and September (around Labor Day at Thunderhill has been our previous norm). October will have NSXPO 2005 in Phoenix.

Cheers,

Hrant

I prefer weekend.

No, fee is not a concern. Laguna Seca is good since we haven't been there since NSXPO 99.

"Build it and they will come". You name the location(s), date(s), and cost(s) for a primarily NSX event and I will come. Because of the distance I would have to travel, I would prefer a 2- or 3-day event.

My wife and I are both interested. Weekends is easiest for both of us as we are M-F slaves. Would that be $250 -$300 per driver? That is kind of expensive - but if it were $250 -$300 per car for trhe event, that would be OK.

We definitely want to do some track events with our car in 2005.
Thanks for taking the time to try to organize this.
Michael

I like the weekends. I have an NSX however, i have a few other cars, Ferrari and Porsches, is it ok to bring one of them also?

thanks,

We have not made a decision on these issues yet

It all depends on whether we can fill all slots with NSXs or not. Given our prior history, I would say we will most likely get to about 40 registrations with NSXs which will make us open it to other car clubs to hit a target of 60 - hence yes you can bring your other cars.

There is also the option that we partner with another club in which case this may become moot depending on what their requriments are as well.

But if you run in more than one group, that is run in two driving levels all the sessions (eg, all four or five sessions in both intermediate and advanced run groups), most clubs consider that equivalent to two car registrations since you would be doubling the amount of your track, our paperwork of tracking the cars, the car numbers, etc. ........... Some clubs allow a driver to drive also in a lower run group as long as (a) the number of cars on the track allow for more cars to be added - at the steward's discretion - ie, we are not maxed out with that run group; and (2) you obey the passing rules of the lower run group. This allows more track time to those who want to run additional laps. But one of the major concerns is the difference in speeds between run groups. Faster student drivers running in slower run groups can really create havoc and extra anxiety among some less skilled student drivers.

HTH.

Here is an update.

Thunderhill has not responded to us yet. Infineon offered us the possibility of a January or December date. We did not even bother checking with Laguna Seca as they will be closed for part of the season.

Focusing on dates around April/May for a Spring event and Sept for Fall here are some opportunities. Good thing October offerings are zilch since we have NSXPO 2005. Both NCRC and Track Masters offer other dates as well; I added a few more in italics.

NCRC has the following dates secured:

Feb 26 and 27 Sat/Sun at ThunderhillApril 23 and 24 Sat/Sun at Fernley/Reno. ARC is running a race on the 24th.
May 27 Friday at Thunderhill
September 9 Friday at Thunderhill - tuning the mods for NSXPO 2005
Nov 19 and 20 Sat/Sun at Thunderhill

TrackMasters has the following dates secured:

Jan 24 Mon at Infineon - an S2000 event open to TrackMasters
April 15 Fri at Thunderhill
May 13 at Thunderhill
May 28 and 29 Sat/Sun at Fernley/Reno
Sept. 23 Fri at Thunderhill - a good warm up for NSXPO 2005
Nov 13 Sun at Infineon
Dec 1 Thurs at Laguna Seca

I have approached both organizations and there is a good chance that we might be able to offer a program with several track events in partnership.

Perhaps we can start a challenge with trophies to those who complete the most laps during 2005 at our NSX sponsored track events, the most improved driver (Sacto has already started such a program and our second annual award will be offered at our Christmas party), the most smack talker with the least results to show (we have some good proprietary ones ....... ), the best dressed for the track, the most mechanically challenged, ........ you name and we can make a nice fun/social event out of it as well.

Mark, you are correct. TrackMasters Racers has not posted the dates yet. The information I have is per an e-mail that I received. See below with some edits.

TrackMasters Racers,

The following message contains multiple items, so please review the main categories for topics of interest before discarding the message.

1. December 15th at Laguna Seca

2. December 6 & 7 at Infineon (TracQuest event)

3. January 24, 2005 Infineon

4. 2005 Schedule

5. Holiday Discount for Racing Apparel

6. Numbers - A perfect stocking stuffer!

Okay, now the more detailed info for each:

December 15th at Laguna Seca - This event is pretty much full, but we may have one or two spaces for High Intermediate drivers. We can also use someone to help 'share the load' managing the re-entry station with our track steward. If you've done this before, then we can use your help. If you haven't but are interested in helping in this capacity, at this and future events, then send a reply and we'll get in touch with you to discuss your qualifications.

December 6 & 7 at Infineon (TracQuest event) - Todd Serota of TracQuest is conducting a HPDE next Monday and Tuesday at Infineon/Sears Point raceway. His group is running very short on drivers, so if you want a deal on some track time next week, review the details for this event at the end of this message.

January 24, 2005 Infineon - THIS ONE IS HOT!!
The Honda S2000 club has asked TrackMasters Racing if we would manage the track event date they have on Monday, January 24th, 2005. Understanding that this is still fairly close to the tail end of the holiday season, and it's still winter, we would like to get a show of hands to see how many of you are interested in attending this Monday event. The event will likely be 3 run groups and the pricing is as follows:

Honda/Acura drivers: $250
Other cars: $285
Instructors: $60 (Note: Instructors would receive a refund if we have enough drivers to 'pay the bills')

We need to round-up about 60 drivers to make this a worthwhile event, so reply to this message immediately if you are interested and willing to commit before New Years with a payment. This will most likely be a rain or shine event, so think about it and reply ASAP! If we don't get enough interest we may decide to cancel this event.

2005 Schedule - The 05 schedule isn't what I hoped it would be but we're still working all the angles to bring you a couple more Laguna and Infineon opportunities during peak season months. As we've stated before, construction downtime at Laguna, and increased demand at Infineon has left fewer dates for groups like us. I'm confident that we will end up with more opportunities at all these tracks, but the tracks plans have not stabilized yet.

So far, the schedule is looking like this:

January 24 Infineon
February None
March Nothing Yet
April 15 T-Hill
May 13 T-Hill

May 28/29 Reno-Fernley
June Nothing Yet
July 29 T-Hill
August Nothing Yet
Sept 23 T-Hill
October Nothing Yet
Nov 13 Infineon
Dec 1 Laguna Seca

Holiday Discount for Racing Apparel - Mark Stein of Motorsport Image in Roseville is offering our members a $25 discount coupon as a Christmas gift toward the purchase of Piloti Driving shoes. They carry other apparel and safety equipment, so there's a chance that the coupon may also be applied towards other products they carry. Specific details can be had by calling Mark at Motor Sport Image & Performance, Inc. - 916-784-2323. They're located on Atlantic Street in Roseville, Calif.

Numbers - A perfect stocking stuffer! - Don't forget that all cars running at our events must have numbers. They can be made of shoe polish, tape, or more professional looking materials, but you all must have them. If someone near and dear to you is struggling to ID a gift for 'somebody who has everything', then you can drop the hint by sending them to this link:

http://www.palmersigns.com/decals3.htm

We've put together a static attach number set for $38. They're about 12" high black letters on a white oval shaped background, and come in a reusable storage tube. They're very high quality, stick like glue, and are removable and reusable! You can use your member number or another unique numeric identifier. If you can't remember your member number, Palmer Signs or TMR can provide it to you upon request.

That's it for now! Please reply if you're interested in the Jan 24 event, and here's the additional detail for the TracQuest event next Monday/Tuesday.

Best regards,

Doug Gale

I would prefer for a spring event the 13 May at T'hill since that is currently on the table. The 27th would be an acceptable alternative, but risks losing people because they are going out of town for the weekend.
