Noisy gearbox?

I could use some advice in trying to determine slight grinding type noise coming from around the shifter/console area. I am having a very hard time duplicating this noise on my 1991 when I go to the dealer. It only comes on after I drive for more that 45 minutes or so. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated, car only has 10K miles.

Have you changed the transmission fluid within the past two years?

Is this for just one particular gear, or all of them?

A grinding is often a symptom of a worn hub selector. People will refer to it as a "synchro" but it's actually the hub selector that wears first (the hub selector mates to the synchro which mates to the actual gear).

Sorry for not being very clear, the noise comes on when the car is in neutral after a long drive. It is not very loud but is continuous once it starts. Oil has not been changed on the trans. since new.

Thanks.

Acura has a recommended maintenance schedule which is in your owner's manual. Each item has a mileage and time interval. They recommend that the transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 miles or every 2 years, whichever comes first.

Even more so than mechanical parts, it's extremely important to change the fluids according to the time interval specified, even if you don't accumulate the mileage indicated. Fluids go bad over time, as they absorb moisture and other contaminants. This is true not only of transmission fluid, but also engine oil, coolant, and especially brake fluid.

I strongly suggest that you take your car to your dealer and review the entire maintenance schedule with them, going over which items have, and have not, been done in the past.

Pauly Acura, which is the dealer on the Edens in Highland Park just north of 22, is extremely competent at NSX service; both Chuck and Craig, their two NSX-trained techs, are excellent. They are one of only two Acura dealers (out of nine) in the Chicago area that do a lot of NSX service.

Original oil in a '91, Yikes! By all means, get caught up on your service schedule. You can't count on low miles to offset the years, which is why they quote limits for both.

That said, you have an interesting opportunity to find out how oil responds to age in the tranny. Naturally it's OK on the shelf for 10 years, but once contaminated through use, heat/cool cycles, condensation, etc. things may be different.

Tell you what, when you get it changed, send me a sample (not the first few ounces or the last) and I'll have it analyzed and post the results. Private me for details.

Thank you all for the info. Just for the record, my car has been serviced correctly since day one. I have 100% of the records since delivery. All fluids ( with the exception of gearbox) have been changed more frequent than the required maint. schedele. I wll review again all records to make sure that I am saying the correct thing about gearbox oil change.
