NO track, what now?

This might sound like a simple question, but Hawaii has no track at all. We have a dirt track kinda, but the "promised" pavement doesnt seem to be coming. Since I don't really have the option to go to another state, and shipping my car to track isnt realistic at all, what is there to do? I'm not huge into street racing, but I want to become a better driver. I have heard that we do have Auto Cross here. I might hit that up, but my car is pretty heavily modified and I know they are going to put me in a big boy class. Does anyone have an idea on how to improve one's driving, cornering, times etc with out the use of a track? I love improving the car, but improving myself seems to be quite a challenge.

auto X will be a humbling and eye opening experience..the harder you try the slower you will go:wink:

You cold autoX and learn how to drift too. And if you are in the states, you can take skip barber or similar in an awesome open wheel formula car. Nothing more fun that that!

What about carting? Indoor carting can teach some of the skills.

You can fly out and take a Skip Barber or Russel school. You can also rent a car and do an HPDE event. I would suggest a two day event.
You don't need to drive you car to learn the technique any car will do.

You can practice car control at an auto cross in your nsx.

all good ideas, how is it for newcomers in the auto x scene, are people pretty understanding? I'm gonna feel shame driving an nsx and rack up terribly slow times lol

Most experienced AutoXers know that it takes more than a great handling car to get good times in AutoX. I saw an Acura Integra beat out Corvette's, STi's, Evo's and a Ferrari 360. I have also seen S2k dominate. Its comes down to tires and driver.

I auto-x a few times a year. My car is no where near as capable as the class i was told i should be in so I'm not usually very competitive. I also am not very good at all. It is all for fun and that is exactly what it is fun. There are some die-hards with purpose built cars for this that i think the nsx would have a horrible time competing with even if it was purpose built. Auto-X is a lot more about all the smooth transitions like said before the harder you try the worse you do usually.

Also the first time i went i hit 4 cones through the day i spun 2-3 times. If cones mark the car at all they have always cleaned off for me. My area takes all the beginners and lumps them together then your time is modified as per what your class is. I usually come in last or close to it. I will get beat out by stock cheap-o cars all the time like cobalt and focuses.. and of course one of the best cars for auto-x IMO the miata but when it comes down to it i don't care i know im not a great driver and my car is nowhere near as modified for my class as i could run slicks in my class but it is always alot of fun.
