I was at the Susan G. Comen Breast Cancer BMW drive today. You get to take out all kinds of BMW's for a short drive and each mile you drive BMW donates a dollar to the foundation.

Anyway, there was a hottie working there and I asked her when I could take the 7 series out. She replied "You don't need to because you drive that" as she pointed to my NSX

Anyway, the 7 series is nice, but I-drive is a nightmare!

I've heard that the new 7 series is not selling well at all. The salesmen are embarrassed to take customers on test drives because the I-drive is so user-UNfriendly. And, of course, it looks like the designers of the trunk lid weren't talking to the designers working on the rest of the car.

I totally agree on both those points! I drove the car for 15 minutes alone and I could NOT figure out how to change the radio station to a station that was not preset. NOT GOOD!

Actually 7 series sales are WAY up vs. last year and expectations. This is a great car and the iDrive is not bad - once you get used to it. I wouldn't let a granny try to drive it but if you have any computer expertise it grows on you and works quite well.

Here is the real production story...

From CNN "FRANKFURT, Germany (CNN) -- BMW's profit has risen by 12 percent in the second quarter of this year, boosted by strong sales of the Mini, 7-series and X-5 sports utility."

Or from BMW's web site:

"Sales of the new 7 Series continue to develop above the expected levels. With a total of 4,600 automobiles delivered, the 7 Series again took over the worldwide market leadership in its segment in July. Up to the end of July, the number of vehicles delivered to customers rose to 30,400 units. This is all the more satisfactory given the fact that only two eight-cylinder petrol engine variants are available at the moment. The BMW Group is expecting sales of the new 7 Series to be boosted still further when a diesel version becomes available later this year, followed by the six and twelve cylinder engine variants next year."

Not according to what I heard. Perhaps it's only selling well in other countries...? (Since the sources you quoted are not U.S.-based.)

It's also worth noting that 2001 was not a good year for 7 Series sales; they were down almost 20 percent (32,749 vs 39,000) vs 2000. So an increase in sales from a down year doesn't mean they're doing well.

Maybe they've increased their sales to the visually handicapped.

I see a LOT of 7s in Pebble Beach.

I think Mercedes has been coming out with some really elegant cars. The new SL,CL, E-class, C-class, S-class etc... are all, IMHO, a step up from the last generation from a asthetic standpoint. BMW... ummm.. well... lets just say I would never get the new 7 series.

When the 7 series debut, the President/CEO of BMW was interviewed in a magazine. It might have been Robbs Report. He himself said the car was ugly, but after some time getting used to the styling he finally saw the beauty in the car and began to think it was the most elegant car he's ever seen. A good looking car is a car that one doesn't need to get used to IMHO.
