Never been there before, staying at The Plaza right by Central Park (August 14th - 17th). Anyone got any suggestions on where to go?

The list is pretty endless but from what I have experienced on my many trips I would have to say:
For steak go to Sparks steakhouse. Great atmosphere and excellent food:cool:

Maybe go down to the Pier (57?) and go out on the intrepred the naval ship would occupy some of your time.

Your going to be closeby for shopping if your into that right on 5th

Take a tour to wallstreet or maybe ask around to see if you know anybody around or even here on prime and see if you can tour the NYSE floor one of the craziest things to see in person I would highly recomend that:D

If you have kids go to the zoo in the park.

If you like sushi, go to Monster sushi. I believe its on 7th ave. Its the best sushi Ive ever had. Ask for the Monster roll.

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p
Might as well ask Syonara to eat mad cow beef! :D

It depends on what your interests are. Museums, restaurants, shows, etc?

Some suggestions:

1. Metropolitan Museum of Art http://www.metmuseum.org/
2. Guggenheim Museum http://www.guggenheim.org/
3. St. Patrick's Cathedral http://www.ny-archdiocese.org/pastoral/cathedral_about.html
4. Circle Line cruise for photo ops of Manhattan from the East River and Hudson River http://www.circleline42.com/index.ihtml
5. Ground zero
6. Off broadway show Stomp http://www.stomponline.com/
7. Sushi pizza at the Mercer Kitchen in Soho http://www.allinfo.net/jg/mercer.htm
8. Peking duck, Crispy Beef, and Steamed Dumplings at the Peking Duck House in Chinatown http://www.chinatownweb.com/PekingDuck/
9. walk around Greenwich Village http://www.nycgv.com/
10. Hayden Planetarium http://www.amnh.org/rose/haydenplanetarium.html
11. If you have the funds, dinner at Le Bernadin http://www.le-bernardin.com/
12. Empire State Building Observatory for photo ops from the highest point in the City http://www.esbnyc.com/index2.cfm?CFID=7521480&CFTOKEN=21918614
13. Staten Island Ferry for photo ops of the Statue of Liberty (best bargain in town and no lines necessary like those for the actual ferry to the Statue itself, especially since you can no longer go up into the Statue) http://www.siferry.com/
14. If you are into photography, go to the best photo store anywhere, B&H Photo, on 33rd and Ninth. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh4/controller/home
15. Romantic dining - One If By Land... (order the Beef Wellington) http://www.cityguidemagazine.com/nycreviews/oneifbyland.html

SUSHI: It is highly unlikely you can get in, but see if Nobu has any last minute cancellations or you can try to time it right to get into Nobu Next Door which does not take reservations. You will not have an equivalent level of sushi/Japanese anywhere else in the city except for the new restaurant in the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle (for around $500 per person). http://www.myriadrestaurantgroup.com/Restaurants/nobu/Nobu Main.htm

Shopping tip: watch out for tourist trap stores with "lost our lease" or "going out of business" signs along Fifth Avenue. Madison Avenue has the upscale boutiques.

Last week I walked from Ground Zero to Battery Park, Statue of Liberty can be seen from there. Wall St., then to Union Sq. (awesome breakdancers at night!) then 5th ave shopping, the Empire St. Bldg, Macy's, and then hit Times sq.

All in a few hours!!!!

Things are fairly expensive, but you have to do it at least once!!

You will never experience Manhatten in a week though.

Go to any pizza joint in the city, and it will be better than anything you've had anywhere else (assuming you recognize NY-style pizza as the best in the world, but who doesn't :)).

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions and especially all of the links, I appreciate it. It's too bad our flight leaves here at 11:00 a.m., so we won't be in New York until 9 p.m. otherwise I would have liked to meet some of you guys and hang out at the zoo.

Any other last minute suggestions would be great.

You asbolutely must:

1. Have a good bagel - several choices like <a href="http://www.handhbagel.com/">H&H</a>, <a href="http://www.murraysbagels.com/">Murray's,</a> <a href="http://www.ess-a-bagel.com/">Ess-A-Bagel</a>, etc. - just pick one that is convenient to the rest of your plans.
2. Eat lunch at a serious NY deli like <a href="http://www.katzdeli.com/">Katz's</a> or <a href="http://www.carnegiedeli.com/">Carnegie </a>

I would also recommend spending a little time in a couple of the ethnic neighborhoods (Chinatown, little italy, etc.) because to me that diversity is a lot of what defines NYC. Although to really get into it you'd also want to get over to a couple other boroughs.

You could spend a year going through museums and art galleries. What to hit really depends on your taste. I liked <a href="http://www.moma.org/">MOMA</a> in addition to the ones RSO listed, but I haven't been there since things got all moved around a few years ago so I'm not sure what the current situation is. I think it's also worth stopping in some smaller exhibit if you get a chance. Just pick up a local weekly arts & entertainment publication at the hotel or wherever, pick something that sounds interesting and go.

Katz is downtown but is a good choice for true NY deli.

Oops you're right, I was thinking of multiple trips to Carnegie ;) I guess I should have actually read the website I was linking to instead of just cut-and-pasting it since it has the address right on the main page! I edited my original message to fix that.

I noticed a couple people mentioned NYSE. I'd definitely call/check ahead on that. With the current security alert I'm not sure if you'll be able to get anywhere near it. Maybe someone else knows for sure?

Thanks for all the suggestions, we hit a lot of hot spots, mostly the regular tourist stuff I imagine. The weather wasn't too bad (besides only 1/2 mile visibility from Empire State Building). It was definitely a good trip.

Oh ya, and Katz makes a damn good sandwich :D
