Just sharing a budget Honda track car build up... I think this sub forum is appropriate... I think some of you probably owned a Civic at one point in the past and thought maybe some of you might enjoy this. :)

I just picked up my second del So about 2 weeks agol. The color is Milano Red. It is 100% bone stock except for some silly 16" ADR wheels. I'm going to use it as a demo car to show case a budget oriented track whore setup... It has the D16Z6 SOHC VTEC drive train. I kind of missing having a full interior car, complete with AC and Cruise Control.

Keep watching this log as we install and tune each part. I've decided to name this Project Cheap Dirty SOHC. Since we are on a tight budget, we will be choosing parts that are good quality but as cheap as possible so people can duplicate this car if they wish.

I'm debating if I should pick up a used Milano Red front bumper or just leave it like this...

del Sol seats with blue accents goes well with red exterior.

16" ADR wheels are probably pretty heavy and will also be soon.

Stock ride high is pretty tall and spring rate is way too soft.

Few dings and scratches but overall, pretty good condition for a car that is 18 years old.

Interior is pretty clean overall. Driver's side seat belt's retraction spring is very weak and it is annoying...

I'm not sure if this is original miles on the odometer!

Stock 22 mm front sway bar.

Stock Si does not have a rear sway bar, notice the large stock muffler it is heavy. A 2.5" catback will be among the first modification to the car.

Just finished title transfer and insurance yesterday. Opened checking account and fixed/updated my paypal so I can order the parts from ebay now. Lots of bushings, camber kits, LCA... etc. ordered from buyhardrace.com already. Just got a new in car camera mount and I got a test footage it came out looking awesome. Enjoy. I'll use the same setup to get some updated NSX in car footage in the near future. :)

Order placed on ebay for:

- 350 mm deep dish steering wheel with hub and quick release
- silver (to reflect heat better) colored cold air intake system
- dual bend short shifter
- engine torque damper brace (stock mounts are pretty shot, good chance for me to try out how well these suckers work)
- front upper tower brace (Neuspeed style)

Should all get here within this week. :) Let the testing begin!!

Slammed USDM DC2 ITR vs. Dirty SOHC. del Sol is at bone stock ride height and yet it is still about 1" lower than the ITR!!

ebay seller messaged me and told me they only have single bends and refunded my $16.45. installed the deep dish steering wheel. it is uber nice especially considering the price. the quick release is pure junk though, the bolts won't go through the 6 holes. it is so filmy i think it's dangerous. gonna toss it in garbage. steering boss and wheel are both excellent.

I'm getting excited about this. Stupid ebay store haven't ship the cold air intake yet. Bastards. Moving the Z.SPEED exhaust and test pipe from delly-O to Cheap SOHC this week.

sorry about the lack of updates. last few weeks i was really busy on sourcing the funding and getting paper works finished up for business. by monday i will be officially co-owner of N1 Concepts. :)

Cheap Dirty SOHC is high on my priority so you will start seeing regular updates here and on!! I plan to take it up to Sacto raceway to do some base line drag racing just like how I used to do it in the old project remix days.

This looks interesting, keep us posted! I think a lot of folks around here would love a cheap track car because they feel bad tracking the NSX...

Do post in the NorCal forums when you're going to be driving it so we can come spectate and cheer team you!

Project Cheap Dirty SOHC Part 2 - 04-6-2012 exhaust and bushings

Uploaded by ghettoracer on Apr 6, 2012
Sorry it took nearly 3 months for this update lol. Time passes fast. I was very busy in February and March because I was busy becoming a partner at N1 Concepts. That's all square away now and we are in the re-organization phase still but things get moving forward and I finally found some time to get back on Dirty SOHC.

My old pal Freeman Lui from VelocityShop actually sent the HardRace goodies back in February and I must apologize lagging on this... I'm as eager as anyone to get these goodies installed so I can enjoy Dirty SOHC to the fullest. I'll do my best to have all the bushings done before April is over so hopefully you will see part 3 soon!!

Looks like fun. I used to have a Civic as well but it was my DD and I wouldn't have thought of turning it into a track car. Regarding the front bumper, I'd try to find a red one or at least rattle-can it to match the body. Depending on what organization you track with, some of them are picky about the paint / bodywork of the cars on the track. Mismatched body panels might be a no-no.

i've been to 220+ track days and i've never heard of a track org kicking a car out for mis color matched body parts. :) if a car is not allowed it would be for safety reason and never because how it looks... civic make great track cars and if you put in 10-15k with all the right parts it will keep up with nsx easily actually... driver's skills accounts for 85% anyway. :)

Then you haven't run with NASA.. They have it in their rules. I was almost turned away when I showed up with my MR2 that needed a paint job. They told me not to come back to the track until I got it painted! Jerks.

Yea, I think his name was Jerry Kunzman or something like that. Regional director for Nor Cal I believe. I was pretty put-off by his attitude and I haven't done a NASA event since, in any of my cars.

Ahhhahaha. Jerry is the big cheese actually. lol. He also owns NASA and last I checked he's still the chairman. He co-founded NASA with this other guy Ali Arsham (cooler guy in general heh). He's gets on power trips at times lol and is hardly the most diplomatic person. I'm sure a bit of people get put off by him. Luckily in California there are tons of choices so we can all have our own little play grounds.

But in your case, might Jerry have been joking about it? Or was he dead serious? I'm curious to see what your MR2 photo looks like. Got pix?

Ah, I see. He was dead serious, unfortunately. The other guys were cool with it. In his defense though, I will say that my car did look kinda ghetto. The body was straight but it was sanded down in preparation for paint. At least it was mostly one color though, white, except for a black bumper. I sold it a couple of years ago to make more room for the NSX. Recently I've been doing HPDEs with NCRC and I've been happy with them, good prices and lots of track time. If I was to do any kind of time trials though I'd look at NASA because I think they have a large presence in norcal. What are your goals for the car? Time trials? Wheel to wheel? HPDE?

cheap sohc is just daily driver/weekend warrior... some HPDE/TT with it later for sure. i have 2 other EG chassis cars:

will be doing a full blown rebuild to break the SuperLapBattle Street FF class later this year in Nov. 2012. it will be to the limit of the rules rebuilt. all legal mods will be performed. rules allow wide body kit, custom suspension (as long as pick up points isn't changed), custom wheel wells for tire clearance. full strip down, seam weld, fancy multi point full cage... etc. looking for 2200 lbs wet and 350 whp (fast response turbo setup).

restoring my other race car nick name FartMachine for NASA Honda Challenge H2 class. this car ran low on oil level and throw a rod at Willow Springs big track in 2007 and also sat for almost 5 years... recently had our fabricator added A pilllar gussets.

mid night dyno research. added Z.SPEED 60 mm catback and ebay 4-2-1 header. even with stock cat power increase is HUGE!!

ebay 4-2-1 ceramic coated header. but the coating is so cheap it is flaking after like 1 hour driving. lame. at least it does look stainless under neath and it works well.

i was a bit shocked at the increase across the entire power band...

yesterday, i installed an old intake manifold that i have sitting around for years. it's the one that develop by omniman and dnr when they used to work at junk2 back in 2002 or so. it's a crude design but it works. basically they took a 170 bhp b16a IM and mated to a D16Z6 IM flange. then used silicone hoses to play with the length until it made the most power. there were no 3d design involved at all, simple trial and error. this is why the packaging is so poor. imo the runner is about 1" too long when i study the old project remix dyno graphs so after this baseline dyno i will probably cut this one and make it 1" shorter. :p

still using the stock d16z6 58-56 mm tb for testing purposes. pulls much harder to redline. was going to sears point to drag it but traffic already started so that'll have to wait until next wed. will try to dyno this week.

went to last weds night drag racing @ Sears Point with 132 whp the best run of the night was:

60' 2.535
330' 6.838
1/8 10.412
mph 68.02
1000 13.525
1/4 16.147
mph 86.08

60' time was 2.5's all night long. sucks. but it was consistent all night i was the bracket winner! went through 5 rounds. i think the car is a little bit heavier than i thought. my guess is around 2200 lbs or so and ~2370 lbs race weight. removing power steering pump and ac system next.

ha, i forgot to lower the pressure tire pressure last week. i dropped it to 30 psi and then 20 psi this week. the tires are old and cracking but 60' improved to 2.3's. best run this week now with 145 whp and 111 ft-lbs:

60' 2.350
330' 6.562
1/8 10.011
mph 70.34
1000 13.035
1/4 15.606
mph 85.33 (i had to brake check near the light i might've broke out otherwise) on a 15.53 dial. best mph 88.99. it's much warmer this week than last week... i think it could've hit 89.5 mph if it was as cold as last week. the valve train picked up a solid 3 mph over the quarter. not bad. 3/10th of et improvement came from reduced tire pressure and better launch. about 3/10th were from power gain.

i got eliminated in 2nd round by .0326 :-(

best mph run:

60' 2.393
330' 6.624
1/8 10.070
mph 70.57
1000 13.083
1/4 15.624
mph 88.99
