I'm sure someone can help--just bought a 93 NSX and the dash light for the speedometer area does not light up--turning the rheostat stat knob has no effect. I think the fuse for this is the Illumi one in the fuse box under the hood and it's okay. A service tech said there is a bulb and to get to it I have to take out a dash section. Probably the lower padded part-found the two phillips head screws and it starts to pull away but cannot figure out how it attaches to the plastic portion at the steering wheel level. I don't have a service manual yet or I would not ask.

Thanks for the info--new to the site also and did not think to look in the FAQ section---I checked the manual and it just states to remove the two screws of the lower center panel to remove---must be more to it than that because it does not want to come out easily--guess the top portion has some type of pop mech like door panels--guess I will have to pull straight out---hard!!! Also figured out from the manual that there is a bulb in the brightness controller which is likely the problem. If not, then I have to go on to the Brightness Control unit. Also confirmed that fuse #38 which is the Illumi fuse in the hood area does control this unit and it's not a fuse problem

Go a search on "instrument panel" or "gauge cluster" in the forums. Very recently this was discussed and described. I believe it did take a littel "elbow grease:)" to get it out.

mmm... just noticed you are in Phoenix, I would give Basch Acura a call if I were you. No better advice then that for sure!!

Thanks for all the help--I found out the center control panel has two clips that hold it in place at the top section. one to the extreme right near the ignition and the other on the left close to notch for the steering....I also know that my problem is with the actual rheostat or the control unit probably..The rheostat controls a whole lot of bulbs in the speedometer area and they would not all be out.....Only 97.00 for the rheostat if that is what it is...

Loose connection only

Wow ---I got the panel off and I could wiggle the connection from there and yes ---there was light!!!!! Just a lousy loose connection to the Brightness controller....Basch Acura--an indpt shop--might never have found them either--closer to me than any of the dealers---thanks for that tip..will use them for service

jrenher,

Be sure to know, Mark Basch is one of, if not "the" most experienced factory trained NSX techs in the US.

I'm sorry when you called this morning my staff could not "guarentee" could look at it oday, but I did tell them to ask you to stop by and I would take a quick look. hope that is what you were told.
I was going to check exactly that! Really! Here's why- about once a month or so I get a customer who has either intermittant dash lights, or intermittant TCS switch operation. If you look at the back of the switch, you will probabally see that the back of the switch is missing, and the circuit board is exposed. This is a very common problem, because either a DYI'r or inexperienced Acura Tech tried to remove the instrument cluster surround. Those two switches plug in to their connectors thru a narrow gap in the dash board structure. If you pull the surround towards you to remove it BEFORE reaching under and unpluging the two connectors, the switches don't hold uo well. The back covers pop off, and then the 4 or 6 pins on the circuit board that the plug plugs into get stretched and often crack on (or aff, as the case may be) the circuit board. Sometimes it can be fixed with solder and a fine tip pencil.

Good Luck,
MB

That's the kind of post that makes me want to drive to AZ for service!

Or, at least, hope MB shows up on the east coast again.

mark baush was right

Thought I had my dash light problem remedied but it went off again--may have to remove the connection to the Brightness controller and TCS to remove the surround and pull the Brightness Controller to see if the back cover was pulled off as Mark indicated might be the case--See New owner--no dash light
