Just stopped by a new dealer for a set of oil filters and was informed that the old filters have been replaced with a newer (smaller sized) filter! I am driving a '93.....I am reluctant to accept this as true without some verification from you guys. I mean we're talking oil, the engines life blood, here. Any body else hear of this change?????

The smaller size they refer to is the Legend filter. I purchased a REAL NSX filter from Acura last week and no mention was made of it being discontinued. They are available, check with another dealer.

darcon,

You dealer is talking nonsense (IMHO). The Legend filter will work but I assume that is life and/or filtration capacity will be less.
The long filter is still in use and can still be obtained without problems. He should order you some.
If he won't help you, you can always buy them at www.daliracing.com.

MvM is exactly correct. The BS meter is pegged at FULL. The original NSX filter is still available.

Thanks for the "heads up". I was searching for a dealer who was more conveniently located and when they told me that these little 'civic' looking filters were replacing the larger filter that I was used too, I was more than a little sceptical. Just called my old guy for a shipment. I cannot wait to return these Legend filters and see the looks on their faces when they hear that they just lost a customer. Thanks Again.....DC

I'm pretty sure those filters you got are not the Legend filters. While everyone above it right about the Legend filter being smaller, it is not that much smaller. It is the same diamter as the NSX filter only about 1/2" shorter. Up until about 1992 the Legend OE filter was actually the same NSX filter but they decided to use the slightly shorter filter thereafter. Anyway, I sure the real Legend filter would still be able to filter just fine given that most of us change oil every 3K miles anyway. If you indeed got small Civic looking filters you probably got something for the RSX/TSX maybe.

This crew mentioned that the original NSX filter had been replaced with this newer, smaller filter which was also the filter for the Legend. They went on to say that the old filter was no longer being made and this the newer filer was what the company had officially replaced the older, larger filter with. It is much closer in size to the OE Civic filter as I drive a'92 Civic as my winter car,and is, by my poor eyes, at least a full inch shorter than the NSX filter that I have been using for the past 6 years.

If it is true that I can still get the original filter, then I was lied to about the old filter being, "no longer available". I guess I'm weird 'bout stuff like that. When a business agent presents informtion in this manner with either malice or ignorance it is an indication of inferior business practises. NOT the kinda places I patronize.

When I go to my dealer, I ask for part #15400-PL2-004. That's the large NSX oil filter. They always have plenty on hand.

Dali Racing also sells the OEM NSX filters by singles or by a pack of 10 and they provide all the cush washers as well. The cost for the 10 pack is abuot $100 which comes out to about $10 each. I think I better buy a pack or two if it is true that Honda really did change the filter.

Sounds like a load of crap? I just picked up filters from my local dealer here... I asked if this story was true. The parts guys there suggested that maybe the dealer there bought tons of Legend filters and don't stock the NSX filter.

I was also told, maybe if they didn't have the NSX in stock they would put on a Legend instead, but would also tell and ask the customer. Or have them wait until one arrives.

NSX filter here in Canada $13.84 CND dealer cost.

Legend Filter $8.67 cost.

Sounds like they are cheaping out? For a mear $5.28... ha!

I'd take them back and demand a refund, go to Dali or another dealer!

That is good to hear. Just to be clear, I didn't say that Honda indeed did change the filters as the quote kind of implies, but was asking the question if Honda really did change the filters.

Sorry to bring back an old topic.

A funny thing happened to me today when I went to the dealer to get an NSX filter. The parts guy told me that American Honda is now using a smaller filter for the NSX:confused: The Legend is also using a smaller filter. I checked out the filter that they use for the Legend and it is a smaller filter than what I used to use on my Legend in the past. Since the dealer can only order the smaller supposed new NSX filters I guess I'll be ordering a case of 10 from Dali Racing. It sounds to me like the bean counters at American Honda are getting active again:(

Just to freak you guys out, I've run the Legend filter on the NSX for some time. Of course, I owned a Legend too. I don't believe the life of the filter was as long, but there were no other problems to speek of. Not yet at least. Still, it seems strange that they are no longer making the filter. More likely BS IMHO.

Gents,

Let's put this to bed once and for all. I just checked and for the record A/H has over 700 (777 as of this moment) OEM NSX filters (part #15400-PL2-004) in one warehouse IN THE US with no official mention of discontinuation.

Anytime,

Please raise the meter again:).

Guy's, help me out. I had my oil changed 3 weeks ago. ( The day I picked my 91 NSX up. ) I had it done at Northwest Acura in Calgary and the part # for my filter was 15400-PL2-315. I paid $14.63 CDN for the filter and .50 cents for the washer. Do we have differen't part numbers in Canada ? Or was I given the wrong filter ?

Should I be concerned with having this filter on my car ? I am rather annoyed now. Why are dealers doing this when there is a propriety filter for the NSX ??

Well, that is good to know that they have a large stock left. I plan on buying a case or two from Dali or somewhere myself now. It just sucks that some of us can't get a simple original NSX filter locally anymore. Now we have to order it from over 2000 miles away. It appears that some dealers will not or can not supply the original NSX filters anymore. Whatever the reason my be, it just sucks.

No, just change it out a little sooner than normal and go back to the longer filter. The only difference is the smaller filter will not be able to filter as much crap from the oil over time. Eventually it will just get saturated and can't filter anymore. Up until that point the design of the filteration internally is the same as for all Honda filters so it will filter the same as the original one. I too have the smaller filter for now, and will probably just change it out at about 2000K miles and when I get my case of original NSX filters in. Just rememver, a brand new smaller filter is still better than an original filter that is already old and dirty.

ChrisK,

You can easily do mail order from:

Dali (as you mentioned)
Neillo
Gunn
www.hondacuraworld.com
Goodson

So I would just not bother with the local guy if he gave you the mis-information he has.

Juice,

This question is a little difficult since you need to know rpm range, and also since the oil pressure gauges(and senders seem to be all over the place, car to car.)

My 1991 (34K miles) idles when fully warm somewhere between 0-1 on the gauge, and about 4 at mid range, then up to 6 or so on up, with a slight drop as VTEC kicks in.

My guess is that dealers who do this, do very little NSX service work, so they don't bother stocking the NSX oil filter. Warning: The NSX front brake pads are interchangeable with some Legend pads also, but again, it's a different part number and you should NOT let them use Legend pads on your car.

Back to the oil filters, you have several choices: (a) You can buy your own at a discount from the places Larry mentions, and bring one with you each time. (b) You can ask your dealer ahead of time, when you make the appointment, to order the NSX filter so that he has it when you have your car serviced. (c) You can go elsewhere for your oil changes. (d) You can do it yourself.

Along the same line, what is the standard oil pressure we should exhibit while driving the car?

See What Is A Normal Oil Pressure Reading? in the FAQ.
