There was some discussion recently regarding the a smaller NSX oil filter (15400-PL2-315) replacing the old larger filter (15400-PL2-004) but it was never mentioned whether Honda has discontinued production of the '004 and officially replaced it with the '315, or merely that some dealers don't want to bother stocking the '004 filter.

Anyone know?

It's the latter. The -004 oil filter is still available and that's what you should use.

If the dealer doesn't stock it, you can (a) find a different dealer, or (b) buy them from discounters like Dali Racing or Niello Acura or Goodson Acura and bring one with you to your dealer. This will save you money and even if the dealer normally doesn't like customers bringing their own parts, they should be willing to use the correct part that they don't keep in stock.

If Im not mistaken, the small one fits, but it's for the Legend. The larger ones specifically for the NSX. And since the NSX is still being made, I see no reason why they would stop making its oil filters.
ps - I went to AutoZone to buy a tool to remove my oil filter(first time doing it myself, second time ever on the NSX). They wanted to check to see if it would fit my car so he asked what car I had. I told him, he pulled out the short filter. He said that was for my car! I told him that its for a Legend and the NSX uses a long filter. But he insisted that its the same that I would get from Honda.

That's the same thing that some dealers apparently do; they want to sell you the part they stock, not the correct part that they don't stock. This is even more common with auto parts stores than dealers. The same thing will be true of brake pads; they will sell you low-performance generic brake pads made for a Legend which will fit into the NSX calipers, they just won't meet NSX standards of performance.

Ironically, the larger NSX filter 15400-PL2-004 was originally a Legend part. Sometime in 1992 Honda decided to use the smaller 315 filter for the Legend. I'm not sure why, but it probably was a cost factor. It appears both the 3.2L in the Legend and the 3.0/3.2 in the NSX use about the same oil capacity. Anyone know specifically why a smaller filter would be okay to use on the 3.2L Legend engine and not on the NSX engine? Other than shorter filtering longevity. I'm not saying to use the Legend filter as I rather use the true NSX filter size myself, but just wondering what the larger filter actual does over the smaller one if you change oil often enough. On my Legend, changing the oil every 3000K miles or so would yeild a fairly clean looking oil just a it does on the NSX. Just for reference, I actually had to use the smaller Legend filter the last time I changed the oil in the NSX since my 1 and only dealer doesn not carry the NSX filter. I've been checking the level and color of the oil since and it still looks clean and I can't see any difference than when I had the true NSX filter. Of course, I'm getting a case of NSX filters from Dali Racing (Pack of 10) for future use.

size matters..... i dont care what the guy at autozone tells ya..... :)

I tend to agree in the case of the oil filter, but can anyone give some scientific facts as to why it is better, and for how long? Is changing the oil and filter at 3000K making the longer filtering capacity a mute point? As easy as it is to change oil and filter on the NSX, I would say it would be much easier if the filter was about 1/2" shorter. It would just give you that much more room to fit the filter wrench on.

I would say that the longer filter would obviously have an increased filter material surface area, thus lessening the "clogging" of the filter material. Also, the larger size would be able to filter larger quantity of oil in a given time than the smaller one. At 8000rpm I personally want the oil to be as clean as possible, granted both filters would perform the same operation, and do the job adaquatly, but I would want the added protection.... even if its minimal, I'll feel safer in my head about it...

Its better to pay a few more bucks if it makes me feel a bit safer in my mind. Plus, few bucks for the PROPER filter vs. incorrect but adaquate filter on a oil starved motor at 8K or something to that extent....

JMHO
YMMV

The oil filter guru I asked said the longer filter (with more total surface area) had more flow capacity than the shorter one. Someone with some spare time might want to check and see if the NSX and the Legend oil pumps put out the same volume.

Trasko Oil Filter

There is a new type of oil filter on the market, commisioned by the Japanese government. It filters out particles 1/10 of a micron in size, as opposed to 20 microns of traditional filters. 10,000 miles between oil changes, enviromently friendly, increased vehicle life, and decreased oil temperatures. It removes all moisture and water content from the oil eliminating 70-80% of engine wear. The oil filter assembly costs about $70 upfront, but replacement media is around $10.

Sweeet!

Man, it sounds great, but what's the truth? With the BS products running around nowadays, it is hard to trust all these "improved" products. Who knows? Maybe if I had used ProLong my engine would still be running.
